Hello all, i just got my t500 in the mail a few days ago and i have a few questions. I just installed the extra 2gb of ram i bought, and now have 4gb on my computer. However, my OS that it came with is vista basic 32 bit. Can i change that to 64 bit, or do i have to buy a new OS? If so, not really a problem as i have a copy of vista ultimate on my old laptop i got for free, and what i would really like to do is swap OS's on the machines. How would i go about doing that; is it even possible.

    Thanks!

You can re-install the 64-bit version of your license if you have a Vista install dvd.

If the Vista Ultimate license is not yet activated, then you can use it. Otherwise, OEM licenses are locked to one machine.

With a Vista install disk, you can backup your activation certificate with ABR [Activation Backup & Restore] and perform a clean install of Vista Basic in 64-bit form. Then restore the activation certificate with the ABR utility.

The Vista Basic is legally bound to your machine by the terms of the EULA. You cannot use it on your other machine.

    You don't need it. 4 gb = 32 bits.

The OP is asking about 64-bit windows so he could utilize the 4gb, instead of ~3 he gets with 32 bit

No, no, no. Thats what I've been saying. The op will be able to address 4 mb with 32 bits because 4gigs = 32 bits. The exec will not show but it will still be using the 4 gigs or 32 bits of addressing.

But only 3gigs will be useable for programs.

That's roughly true because the exec takes space and is generally not shown as taking space.
