I just got a T440s for a person at work and have been pretty impressed with it. Looking at the X1 Carbon (Haswell) it seems like they are very similar? Here are my thoughts for business / education. Physically other than front tapering on X1 they seem almost identical.

    T440s
    Pros:
    VGA
    Removable / Expandable battery
Up to 12 GB of RAM and dual channel (8GB) for better performance
    SD Card Reader
    FHD Screen Size Option
    3 USB

    Cons:
    Thicker at front?
Smart Card Reader - for me who cares

    X1 Carbon Haswell
    Pros:
    Thinner at front
    Full size HDMI
    WQHD Screen Size Option

    Cons:
No Ethernet built-in (need it for imaging)
8 GB RAM max and single channel I would guess
    Only 2 USB

What do others think? Not sure if X1 is stiffer / more tough than T440s?

the X1 is something like 0.3 kg lighter (which is probably almost made
up by the weight difference between the 45w t440s adapter and
    the 90w adapter for X1's quick charge0

    Other differences noted:
*Keyboard on T440s traditional vs smaller keyboard with adaptive strip on X1
*Auo or LG screen on non-touch T440s, vs LG only on X1 ?? (I haven't heard of anyone getting an Auro screen for the X1). Owners claim that Auro screens seem to be superior as the LG screens claim to not be as clear (they are calling it a "screen door" effect)

I'm also facing the same decision... would be interested to hear which way you went with this

regarding Ethernet, it seems that both have Ethernet, just the X1 requires you to attach the extra dongle? I would probably only use Ethernet at my office with a dock so not really an issue.

I don't need the super extended battery life of the t440s, and it seems the you can replace the battery in the X1 yourself?

Not sure which one is more durable?

Finally the keyboard would probably be the deciding factor for me. Does anyone know any differences in keyboard size (other than that special row on X1) and key travel between the 2?

I was making the same choice between the X1 Carbon (2014) and the T440s. The X1C's greatest benefits in my mind were the light weight and the high-resolution screen. What ultimately drove me to the T440s though, were:
    - Keyboard with greater key travel
    - Keyboard with traditional function key row
    - Memory card slot
    - Built-in VGA and ethernet ports
    - Possibly better cooling
    - Lower price

I was faced with the same dilemma and couldn't decide between the two. I wasn't able to get a hands-on on either so ordered both (each non-touch) for work. T440s comes March 5th and X1 is scheduled to be delivered March 14th - looking forward to seeing which one I'll take to. As long as the battery life on the x1 is good and assuming I can live without true "f" keys (quite a leap I think) - I'm leaning towards it. Days are dragging since making the order and waiting.

Both x1 and t440s non touch did arrive a while back I posted in the forums on both at length if you can't find in my history I'll link them. But in general love everything about the x1 except the adaptive f-strip - and the display (lg) and to a lesser extent the trackpad. Weight was great. Potentially concerned over battery life long term. But build quality - and keyboard were epic. Size/Weight epic. If they could have just thrown in some regular f keys I probably would have kept it.

Enjoyed the t440s as well: again great keyboard, display was meh (lg) and again to a lesser extent trackpad/smoothness. size and weight were fine - not nearly as tight/light as the x1 but very usable. In the end I got rid of both of them due to the display (well and the f-key adaptive strip on the x1). Dropping about $2k I expected a better display.

Question: am I to just accept that the track pad and scrolling on all windows laptops aren't near as smooth as a mac book? I've only had 1 apple PC being a 2011 MBA and have yet to experience a windows trackpad that is nearly as smooth?

If the x1 had a better display and got rid of the fkey strip I would have kept that and been in love.
