I was searching through a bunch of threads from 2007 that said the WUXGA screen is not that good for the T61 but it might get better in a few months. Has the screen gotten any better? Is it dimmer still than the WSXGA+?

I am pretty sure they are using the same screens old screens.

It's the same screen from the T60 based on the part manual/PDF. That PDF also mentions it runs at 175 nits while the WSXGA+ runs at 200 nits.

So, basically you folks say to stay away from the WUXGA screen?
Your opinions are much appreciated. I plan to order my machine today. Thanks. -
I didn't choose it because the resolution was too small. Bad for eyes, see. But, it's still the same thing on the T60.

I'm not saying you should go one way or the other, thats completely up to you. I wanted something brighter and as I'm using this to replace my desktop (if it ever gets here), I didn't want to stare at that resolution for hours on end.
For me...that's some pretty small text to be adjusting all the time. Go to a local retailer and check out the differences on a 15" laptop. -
The WSXGA+ is great.

I have a T61 with WXSGA+ and a T61p with WUGA, and to be frank they both are fine to me. I change the resolution for each unit based on what I am working on. I don't know what is best for you -- I think the advice of going to store, and looking is probably great advice. In regards to the NITS issue it is hardly noticeable to me. Until today I didn't realize the WUXGA screens had a lower NITS rating. The effective NITS can be 70 percent or more of the rated NITS at times. Your mileage may vary, and what is right for is a matter of choice.

One of the biggest problems I have been facing in this purchase is the inability to see anything useful in the stores. All we really have around here is Best Buy and Circuit City. Neither store carries anything in high res for any size screen any more( Best Buy says there is no market for it in this area ). I would love to go to the store and see if I could compare screen res options but it is difficult. My ideas of screen res have gone back and fourth from high to low and now I am leaning towards high, since I learned that you can adjust the DPI and the nosquint and Ctrl++ options in the browser.
I have however been able to see the WSXGA+ screen on an ASUS, Dell 1530(in Dell Kiosk, which closed all around the country now so can't see again) and Z61m. Most recently I was able to find one place(far away) that had a WSXGA+ on a Z61m 15.4" and I was able to play with it for a few minutes. I was surprised, I really liked the screen res(screen was little on dim side, had to turn up to max or close to it for it to be nice), so I know now that I don't want anything lower than WSXGA+ on a 15.4" screen. I have however never seen a WUXGA res on any size screen in person and I don't know of any shop here that has one for display. So, I have no idea what I would get myself into if I go for that. I figured with the really high res and low nit level, the screen might be impossible to see and unusable for me. -
This is true, virtually nobody carries Thinkpads in a retail venue.
Apart from the vocal minority, which as I've said before, I suspect of being a tad bit disingenuous , most posters like their screens. I mean it really depends on what you are going to use it for, but for me, a developer who occasionally has to demo software to someone looking over my shoulder, it's great. It's bright enough, and now that I've got the TPFLX color management drivers in place , the side viewing angles are excellent. -
i have a LG wsxga+. mildly grainy, has dead pixels (requesting replacement).
I am also debating whether to go WUXGA 15.4 for +150 bucks, but it would require me to send back this laptop, wait ~month to get a new one, and also the chance of getting a dud laptop (besides the screen, this T61p currently is perfect).
I may just go and buy a screen from ebay later on:

matte, LG, guaranteed no dead pixels (not really sure about this) -

I am going to be the only person using this laptop. My main use for this machine will be home/personal use. I like to tinker with stuff and I defenetly want to put Linux on this machine. I am also a software developer, so I might do a little programming on it, but not so much so these days. I really would love to be able to have my browser window sized as large as possible to maximized, so that I can read a full webpage comfortably and also have a little windowed movie running at the top right. -

well the WSXGA+ definitely has enough real estate, but the more the better. I have used 1920x1200 on 24" screens before and really liked the amount of space in comparison to 1680x1050 on the same screen size (24).
it is the font size that i am concerned about for 15.4. the font size on the wsxga is adequate, perhaps just a few notches smaller will be too small. -
@the fire snake: here are the TPFLX icm files. You may need to use the Displayprofile tool to import the gamma features of the ICM.

Thank you everybody for your help and suggestions!!
I just ordered my T61p
I decided to go with the WSXGA+ res on the screen for a few reasons...
1.) The thinkpad screens are not the brightest in the world and from the pictures and comments I have been exposed to, I think the 175 nit WUXGA screen would be very difficult to deal with for me.
2.) I think images/icons would be easy to see on a WUXGA for me, but the text(not the browser text but folder names, control panel etc) is going to be a problem. This would require me to change the DPI to a higher setting, probably to simulate the size with WSXGA+. I don't see to much of a point to this. If I get WUXGA, then I want to stay with the res without dpi scaling.
3.) I had a great quote saved from the grand slam saving deal, that expires tonight. I had configured the WSXGA+ screen with my quote and I didn't want to lose that. The price was really too good to lose.
This is the first laptop that I have owned. Though I have used Toshibas, Dell Lattitudes and Inspirons in the past. Hope things turn out well and I don't get a lemon . Maybe if the next generations of thinkpads get brighter screens my next one will have a WUXGA screen -
congrats. long time coming I think you should be more than happy, I am with mine.
Has the WUXGA screen on the T61 gotten any better?
