    Hey Manny,

Please post your impressions when you get the W701.
I am going on vacation for 2 weeks next week and after that I will have to decide between the M6500 and W701.
I followed the whole huge M6500 thread and it makes me feel better to see it tested so thoroughly but I am still curious about the W701.

Maybe you should start a magazine called playtop for Aikimox, hehehe, and have all your laptops wear a techno bunny suit and those without any fairings.....

on a more serious note, why did you decide to upgrade from W700 to a W701?

    Hi thinkpad knows best,

    No,

My W700 had a series of problems that could not be solved, so Lenovo and I
decided it was time to send my W700 back to its mommy for safe keeping…

I think I took the W700 from its mother to soon; it needed to nurse a little longer,
    so it could mature Into the W701... ;) <O :p</O :p

    lol...

I am very curious as to whether you are experiencing any heat issues. By going to gigabyte video cards, faster processors, and more memory, I would think there might be some heat problems, unless the design has somehow been changed for better cooling.

I am considering the W701, but want to hear from Lenovo W701 owners first.

    Thanks for any info.

What were the problems that couldn't be solved..? The W700 had GB GPU's.. it doesn't really add that much heat to the overall package.

The W700 has great heat management system, and they don't run hotter than the W500.

I am a ChemE student at the moment but I'll gradute soon (2 months). I'll buy a workstation soon. Right now I use the T400 or the 2530p for CAD (Autodesk AutoCAD; P&ID, Inventor, Solidworks, CADworks, etc) but I've seen desktop workstations and they are blazing fast and stable so I thought my productivity would raise if I had a mobile workstation (I must have bought a W500 instead of the T400 but I had a good opportunity with the T400 when I bought it)

You sure do a lot of CAD design for a chemical engineering student. When i was doing my chemical engineering degree, we just used HYSYS and Matlab, we hardly touched AutoCAD or the likes.

I do use HYSYS, ChemCAD, Pro II and Matlab but recently I've found some Autodesk products useful for projects. It's nice to see some fellow chemical engineers here in the forum. Finally congratulations! You sure have a lot of Thinkpads (so jealous). :D

I'll be very interested in a screen-to-screen comparison as far as the 2xCCFL WUXGA panel on the W700 vs. the RGB-LED backlit one on the W701.

    mannyA,

The suspense is killing me. I have a T61p which I use for work and need to order a replacement. I am looking at W701 and would like to know what your first impressions are.
I need perormance for running a lot of std office apps plus VMWare images so I will be getting 8GB, the Intel Core i7-820QM Processor (8M Cache, 1.73 GHz) and 2 internal SSDs. with this perroamnce (for what I need) will not be an issue.

The thing I am most fussy about is.... the display!!! I am very curious how you like the WUXGA RGB-LED-BL display as that is the one I'm going to order.
On my T61p I currently have the 15" WUXGA+ 1920x1200 display and of course after gettting 2 years ago it I quickly realized that the dpi/fineness was too high for my eyes... I've had to deal with it and use a larger external display most of the time but was thinking that having the 17" display at same resolution (1920x1200) would probably feel just right.
ALSO... the brightness on the T61p display was 'not' good enough for me.

so... please pass along your feedback on the W701 and especially the display.

    Thanks in advance!
