Hey guys, last night I was curious to see what kind of RAM my X60s had so despite being a bit sleepy, I decided to go ahead. I had unplugged the power cable but accidentally left the battery in when I took one of the memory sticks out. By that time, I had noticed the battery and removed it before re-inserting the RAM. I pressed the power button and the laptop, whose display did not even turn on, emitted a beep pattern of 1-3-3-1 with either the battery or power cable in. I then removed all the power sources, reseated the memory, plugged the power sources back in, and the laptop POSTed without beeps. The BIOS showed the correct amount of memory.
It was a very frightening experience and a quick look through Lenovo's maintenance documentation showed that the beep pattern was indicative of a problem with "DIMM or System board." I ran the built in memory test in the Recovery and Restore Thinkvantage software to 37 passes and it looked fine when I woke up this morning. I tried to look for its log file but never found it. The system board test went fine as well.
Well, I was just wondering if anyone else made the same mistake as I did and if their laptops were the worse for it. I did ground myself periodically during the entire episode and the only time the battery was plugged in was during its removal, and not insertion. I don't understand why the system would beep as it did, since there should have not been a voltage differential during the removal? Well, the machine appears to be working fine at the moment, but if anyone can tell me whether or not I damaged something, that would be great. I am a bit paranoid because I just bought this machine and am seeking some comfort on the boards (great place btw).

As long as you grounded yourself completely, I'm sure your computer is alright.
-
I doubt anything is damaged.
-
What are you worrying about? I always exchange rams on my vaio with battery on.

Ideally after removing the "baddery" you should hit the power button to eat up any latent "juice" before opening it up for repair/installation.

That's fine, I have been there.

No worries, as long as the power is not turned on it should be fine whether the battery is installed or not.
I think the manual tells you to remove the battery before opening up the unit is to exactly prevent the system from being powered on. -
Eh, I've done it countless times with the Battery still in, etc, etc. You're fine, I honestly think what you did was that you didn't have the memory seated in correctly as to why it made the series of beeps that indicated such.
-
you should be ok as long as you were not standing on carpet and didn't produce any shock

Ah, thanks for the reassurance. Sometimes I get nervous about small things like that, I'm a worrier hehe.
Has anyone accidentally installed RAM with the battery plugged in?
