    Harddisk problem

    I got my T61 laptop yesterday. my harddisk was configured to 160 GB. but total space is coming only 143 GB and total available space is 130 GB.

    is it so with laptops or any problem with my laptop ?

    (operating system is Xp)

    advertised space doesn't equal real available space

    Formating takes space. They will often specifiy unformatted space and they will specificy a gigabyte as 1000 x 1000 x 1000 bytes where computers calculate space in gigabytes as 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes.


    Also when you format a disk the size of the Master File Table is also allocated.

    What you showed looks about right.

    I bought a 100gig drive, and after I installed my programs and everything I was left with around 40gig. Good thing I bought the ultrabay HD adapter and a Hitachi 7k200 drive; much better.

    The recovery partition alone takes around 6.59gig.

    Also, windows shadow copy and system restore will take a toll on HD space.

    EDIT: My main HDD is actually 100gig; I even forgot! Now I only have 41gig free and all I did was install my software :( and do updates.
