I've got an x220 and the mechanical drive is extremely quiet. I'd like a visual indicator, preferably in the system tray, that can show me if the drive is spinning or not.

Does anyone know of such a tool?

Not on the x220. There is a HD access indicator, but no indication to if the drive is spinning.

I hoped hdparm would help but it causes the drive to spin up when you query the power status.
