Hey! I've just registered, but I've been visiting this web for quite some time. You see, I have the laptop described in the title and I would like to upgrade the HDD. It originally comes with:

    80 GB Hitachi
    SATA
    5400 RPM / 8 MB buffer

And I'd really want to buy this one:

    250 GB Hitachi (model: HTS723225L9A360)
    SATA
    7200 RPM / 16 MB buffer

And my question is, is it compatible? Will my laptop recognize the size capacity? And since it came with a 5400 RMP disk, it won't be a problem if I install a 7200 RPM HDD?

I hope you can help me. :)
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your answer. :)

I'm glad to know they're compatible, but do you think it would be good to use a 7200 RPM HDD? I'm a bit unsure about the heat. I don't want to damage my laptop over heat issues. =/ I'm using a cooler, but still I'm unsure.

Also, apparently my current HDD is SATA-150 and the one I want to buy is SATA-300, is that a problem? Can my laptop still use/recognize that HDD?

I'm sorry to ask this, my computer knowledge is quite limited. ^^'

Lenovo often sells stock 7200 rpm disks for Thinkpads. Yes, they are compatible.

current 7200rpm 2.5 inch hdd should produce negligible amount of heat under most normal circumstances due to the better bearing design for the spindle.

SATA1 or SATA2 is not an issue here, since no platter hdd can exceed the SATA1 limit. The only hdd that can exceed SATA1 speed is the SSD.

For some SATA2 platter hdd you may need to set the jump to make the connection run in SATA1 mode, but most just slots straight in and adjust accordingly by itself.

Great, then I'll buy this HDD.

Renee, I asked mainly because my laptop it's a bit old (2006, I think), so I wasn't sure if it would be able to handle the size and the speed of the new drive. (And I don't even know if it has anything to do with this, haha, like I said, my knowledge is very limited). :)

Thank you very much for your help!

Ok, now I'm not so sure anymore, haha. I have two options: Pick the 7200 RPM or the 5400 RPM, same size, same manufacturer (250 GB, Hitachi). I'm confused! Can you tell me, if it were your laptop, which one would you choose? Which one would be better?

My laptop has a Core 2 Duo T5500 (1,66 GHz) processor and 2 GB of RAM, and I mostly use it connected to the AC power (without the battery). I'm not sure if the 7200 RPM drive is worth it, but if it is then I might buy it. So what would you choose? I would really like to read some opinions. :)

i use 5400 rpm in most of my Thinkpads, and i do really notice much performance difference between it and when the 7200 rpm hdd is installed (i only got two) in my T60 (which also have the T5500 CPU).

Thank you! I'm really considering getting the 7200 RPM drive. Although I've been thinking that it might be best for me to get a 5400RPM HDD, just because I'm unsure about the heat, but I don't know.

    Anyway thanks again! :)
