Alright, so my U330 is out of warranty from Lenovo, and I've already upgraded the hard drive to a 320GB from the stock 250GB. However my 250GB drive just took a dump. It is a Fujitsu and according to their website Toshiba now handles all their drive RMAs. On the newegg site, it shows the drive as having a 3 year warranty, and I know the U330 model hasn't even been out for 3 years yet. When I put the serial into the Toshiba site, it says:
"Warranty could not be determined for this serial number. If you have any questions you may contact TAIS at 1-877-689-4899."
and then in the box to left it says "Out of warranty". I think it's defaulting to "Out of warranty" because it doesn't recognize the serial, rather then the drive itself actually being out of warranty. I'm just wondering if maybe Toshiba doesn't handle Fujitsu OEM RMAs, and I'm not checking the warranty status at the right site?

The original drive was warrantied through Lenovo as part of the warranty for the laptop (aka an OEM drive). Chances are very slim that you will be able to get that drive replaced yourself.

Well, since your Lenovo warranty has expired and it is the stock 250GB that has the problem, I don't think you can RMA it.

Fujitsu drive in your laptop has Lenovo logo printed on it, and all warranty must be done through Lenovo. This is not an aftermarket drive.
Basically, this is a warranty fraud, and i don't think you should do what you are suggesting. -
the drive is OEM'd to Lenovo and they are the ones who undertake the warranty responsibility. and since your warranty is expired, you are not eligible to get it replaced for free.
like any OEM maker, Fujitsu/Toshiba keep records of what serial numbers are OEM parts which is why they don't have any warranty information for that drive. so in a nutshell, their system is working perfectly, and you are not doing anything incorrectly.
it would be the same story if you bought a Dell desktop which had an OEM Maxtor drive. Maxtor is not responsbile for warranty coverage...they will tell you to contact Dell. that is exactly how the OEM system works.
