    Hey Everyone,

I just purchased a T61 from the outlet store and everything was to my liking except for the 80GB hard drive (I need something 120GB or higher). I usually get my parts from newegg because of their great prices, so I want to check there for the new drive. Does anyone have any recommendations on a drive that is quiet and runs cool? I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Performance wise they're all same difference. In the lab perhaps one scores better than the rest, but in real world performance they're all pretty close. If you want a performance boost I'd suggest a 7200RPM drive. With faster seek times, they often seem faster even if the throughput isn't as great as other drives.

Noise seems to be hit or miss, even amongst the same drives. You can have two drives of the same make and model, one noisy and the other is not. Order one and if it's not to your liking, ask for a replacement.

I personally prefer Seagate drives. If you get a Seagate drive you're entitled to a free download of DiscWizard. DiscWizard is a limited version of True Image. Some of the options are turned off, but it does everything I need it to. I like to do a clean install then make an image so I can put it back at anytime I want. Some other manufacturers may offer this as well, but I've not looked.

Thanks. I have always purchased Seagate drives for my desktop. I did find a good deal for a 7200 RPM 320GB Hitachi drive though. $89 after rebate.

seagate 7200.3 series is top rated. wd scorpio black is also great, followed by hitachi 7k320.

I have a 320GB Hitachi 5k320 in my x200. It is a solid performer, runs cool&quiet, and you can pick it up for $60 after rebate.

I went with the WD Scorpio Black 320GB. It was $85 at nowdirect.com I have read some reports saying it vibrates too much and is noisy. However, some forums suggest the opposite as well. I guess I will see.

I just got the Scorpio 320GB and stuck it in the T400, it's slightly quieter, slightly cooler and a heck of a lot faster then the fujitsu 5400rpm I started with (as expected). I think you'll be pleased.

Reinstalling from lenovo's recovery discs was nice and easy too.
