    Whenever I use the AC adapter or go into High Performance mode.... When there is hard drive activity... excessive I guess, if you listen carefully you can hear the normal chatter of the hard drive, but also this annoying whining sound. It is not the CPU, it definately is coming from the hard drive... near the fingerprint reader... I scanned the drive, it's ok... is this normal?

    This is a little scary. I'd run harddrive diagnostics and watch it very carefully.

    It it shows errors. DO NOT use the machine until you have a replcaement and only then to do a backup.

    I have run a scan already. It's ok. It's not a constant high pitched sound... it sounds like the hard drive... the high pitched sound is mimicking the hard drive sounds... only it's also higher in pitch/whiny... any ideas??

    Yes. A scan is not what I said although it helps. Run hardware diagnostics made by the disk vendor.

    OK, watch it closely for a few weeks. Just before a hard drive crashes, it will whine or squeal. Sounds like that are reason for alarm.

    A high pitched sound portends to a loose capacitor. Perhaps something else in that area is not soldered correctly. Have Lenovo check it out.

    Maybe so if the noise is electrical. Not so is the noise is mechanical.

    A high pitch sound from a loose capicitor (for example on your motherboard) would be due to vibration of the soldered joint IMO.

    cowbawx, i have a similar configuration t61p except i'm running winxp. i also have the similar problem...if it is a loose capacitor maybe it's something in hitachi's production process. i just received mine a week ago. did you get a resolution to the noise? what's the condition of your drive as of now?

    this has to be a hard drive issue. they swapped the hard drive out (for the same one) and it does the same thing, but it sounds a little different.. same high pitch read my post more carefully. it's gotta be the hard drive.

    I agree. That's why I asked the condition of your drive, but seems like you had it replaced.
    FYI, for the people that think it's the CPU:
    If you look at this thread where Hellbore took a t61 apart:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=179586&highlight=high+pitch
    Images-> http://jerry.cleedo.com/t61guts.html
    The area where the noise is coming from (front right corner) has no PCBs near it, just the HD. I'm assuming the CPU is in the upper left area where the fan is. If you put your ear close to the HD area it is really apparent that this is where the noise is from. Also, I get the sound whenever I am plugged in not when on battery.

    I just had Lenovo replace the drive with a new one. I still have the same issue. I called them again, they are useless. They tell me that it may be the motherboard, (the sata controller) but other people are having the same issue - so I doubt it. I also said, well will I be receiving a used or new one? She said in the warranty it could be either -- so I was like well what if this doesnt work? Then I gave up my new m/b ? lol I suggested it may be the Hitachi drive.... she couldnt tell me... so next logical step at this point, would be to contact Hitachi and find out from them if anyone has reported this issue. The rep said I could replace the hard drive, but i didnt wanna do that again, what a pain it is....

    I have this issue also with my HD. It annoys me a lot. I was thinking of calling lenovo and getting my HD replaced but it does not seem to remedy the situation.

    I have a x61T. Only happens on the AC adapter. Did you resolve the situation? Is there a fix?
