I don't think recovery media remakes an eligible partition if it exists already. Probably just unpacks the WIM to the partition.

No: the recovery media is a drive image, so it just creates an exact copy of the data onto the SSD, regardless of alignment.

A clean install of W7, on the other hand, would properly align on the SSD. This is done using the W7 key that comes with your laptop, but using stock W7 install disks rather than the recovery media. See this link for more details on how to go about this procedure.

I already have the images --I'm a Technet Plus subscriber so I have a MAK for Win7 Enterprise, and I have an NFR copy of Win7 Ultimate from Microsoft as well, so I could easily put either of them on there; it's what I've done in the past, as opposed to loading all of the ThinkVantage stuff.

I just was curious, because I didn't know how much of the Enhanced Experience 2.0 configuration could be replicated without using Lenovo's discs. My previous ThinkPads have all been clean-installs, but I didn't want to miss something important this time around what with the new hardware.

Also note the second-most recent BIOS update for the T420:

    UEFI: 1.21 / ECP: 1.07

    * (New) Added support for the mSATA preload model.
    * (New) Added support for the function to configure Boot Priority Order via WMI interface.
    * (Fix) Fixed an issue where OS boot might fail from the CD.

I'm wondering how Lenovo's preload configuration works.
