HELP. My X60 was destroyed by a water spill. I figured I would simply replace it with the X61, but the Lennovo rep. says it’s being phased out, so I should buy an X200 or X300. I travel quite a bit, the reason I got the X60, so I like a small, lightweight model, but don’t want to purchase an X61 if there are comparable notebooks which will take me a bit into the future before later and greater ones come available. I have additional A/C adaptors, the X60 CD/DVD burner accessory unit, and a car adaptor, which the Lennovo rep. said aren’t compatible with the X200 or X300. However, I read on the Forum they are. Any thoughts and info are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am pretty sure the A/C adapter and possibly the car adapter will work with the x200/x300 (they all use the same 20V plug and 65W adapter). If by CD/DVD burner accessory you mean the Ultrabase, then that will not work with the x200/x300 (although it should work with the x61 ). However, if the CD/DVD burner is simply an external USB drive it will work fine (you can probably also buy an enclosure for the Ultrabay drive if you have the base or use the x60 drive in the x200 Ultrabase).

Between the x200 and x300 it comes down to the features you want.

The x300 is defined by its thinness and integrated DVD±RW. If these features are not that valuable to you, I would advise against the x300 as it is expensive, lacks key features (docking station, ExpressCard, SD reader) and is underpowered compared to the x200.

The x200 offers the most powerful config (2.26 or 2.4GHz C2D) and a good array of features (54mm express card, SD reader, Dock, Webcam, WWAN, modem, Gigabit Ethernet, 3xUSB) in a reasonably compact package at a decent price.

The x200s is slightly less powerful (1.86GHz max) and slightly more expensive that the x200, but it is a good option if you take your notebook with you frequently. The x200s is about 0.5lbs. lighter than the x200 and offers better battery life due to the LV procesor and LED screen. The x200s also offers a 1440x900 LED screen (compared to 1280x800 CCFL on the x200). However, the x200s with LED DOES NOT include a webcam or WWAN. The x200 Tablet is also a very good option (superb screen), but it is more expensive and heavier than the x200/x200s.

All of them are decent options, but the one that is best for you depends on your usage. If you take your laptop with you all the time and value light weight and good battery life, you should go with the x200s. If you run a lot of CPU intensive applications (A/V encoding, compiling, compression, etc) and/or want WWAN/webcam you should go with the x200. If your top priority is a thin laptop and/or you need a DVD±RW frequently, you should go with the x300/x301.
