the bottom of my x61 is hotter than steaming *water*. Specifically, right beneath the USB/VGA ports on the left. It's not where the heatsink/fan is, but a but closer to you. THere is a slight buldge where the hardware is, whatever it is. This appears to be a relatively new problem, too. what hardware is there?
2gigs, vista basic, wireless on, intel Core2 Duo 2.00 GHz t7250.

seriously, it's almost too hot to touch.... and i'm a tough-guy.
-
I think the heatsink is actually mounted right there, and a heatpipe leads to the fins further back. Look at pg 102 of the maintenance guide (linked from this forum's sticky), you can see the entire heatsink in relation to those ports on the motherboard.

k. looks correct. what do you think? my comp is clean. I take very good care of it.
i'll run the virus/adware programs (Avast!, Spybot, Lavasoft, Defender) i have. I usually do this in safemode actually. Is this a ridiculous thing?
I did just run an update yesteday for windows and the flash memory.,,, but i do this most of the time it tells me to. I do read the updates and select the ones which look reasonable. -
What kind of temp is your processor running at? I'd run it as little as possible and call Lenovo, you might not have done any damage yet. If it's under warranty they'll fix it regardless, but you have less possibility of a headache if the processor hasn't been damaged.

I think I've worked it out.
I am not sure, but i noticed just now that when I ran my "power saving" profile my computer stayed ice cold. So I looked at the detailed settings and saw that the processor was set to run at a maximum of 33% and a minimum of 5%. This seemed sensible.
In my "maximum performance" mode the processor was set run at a max of 100% and a minimum of 100%. Now I don't actually know what this truly means, but I dropped the minimum to 30% and I can say that the fan is running much much slower and the bottom is not nearly as hot. Mind you the computer has only been on for 15 minutes. I'll go screw with some basic browsing and other things and see what happens.
Anyway, I am not sure if this works or even makes sense, but we'll see. I'll let you know what i find. -
Well, your processor should be able to run at 100% without overheating. Throttling is a work around, but it should only be temporary.
-
ok right now, just browsing around, they're at 58 degrees and 55 degrees celcius.
watching multiple videos online at once through youtube and quicktime ramps it up to about 75 degrees. -
Oh wait, I see, you dropped it down so it can throttle, not so it has to. At first I thought you set the max on ac to 30%. Still though, 75 degrees is really hot, and if you have a bulge around the heatsink... you should get it checked out.
-
the buldge is supposed to be there. sorry i wasn't clear about that. ok thanks. i'll get a feel for it over the next few days and see what the trends are.
in the past hour of screwing around watching videos online it maxed at 80 degrees for second, but hovers at 75. It rides at 65 just browsing the internet, and and drops to 53 when I'm not doing anything. -
ok i know this is not a completely gripping thread for everyone, but i thought i'd just confirm that this was the problem and that other newbies like me may have the same situation going on.
My cores are running at 45 degrees now just browsing the net, and have a little satisfying check mark next to them. earlier today they had red flames, and the computer was hot. Now it's hardly even warm. *does small fist pump*
it's just a matter of setting minimum processor percent (whatever that means) to a lower value. mine is at 5% now. the maximum is still 100%, and when i am doing something that needs memory, it ramps up. -
newb, jk
thanks for the tip *changes the setting*
HEAT HEAT HEAT x61. not your typical palm rest complaint.
