I’m thinking of buying the T61 with the cheapest HDD and swap it out with a 160 G 7200 RPM when I receive it.
Off course i will lose the hidden partition after the swap.
Is this a problem or is there a way to copy this hidden partition to the new drive so that I can do a system recovery with the back up DVD’s.

Thanks for making a separate thread. I'd like to know the same thing.

I'm planning on doing the same thing. I would think you can make an image of the drive (I'm going to use Acronis True Image) and back it up to an external hdd. Then restore it to the new hdd. I haven't even ordered my laptop yet (hopefully next week). So I won't be able to test this for a while.

Exactly just clone the old drive to the new drive using Acronis and you'll be good to go.

I don't think the original installation is worth it. Too much bloatware that causes sluggish speed. You should try using the upgrade DVD coming with it to make a clean installation. That helps a lot on speed side. Then use Ghost or Acronis for making backup image to external USB drives.

Lenovo provides a maintenance utility to select what gets installed.

Also when I got to sell my laptop it would be nice if it were in the same condition that I bought it. I'm guessing the person I buy it from would like the thinkvantage button to work at boot.

burn the recovery DVD's or ask ibm for copies, toss in the new harddrive, run the recovery. at the end of the install, it will automatically make the 5 gig hidden partition.
