Or maybe it's cause of CPU too? I just got a T450, coming from a X230. Done a Win7x64 SP1 clean install, installed drivers, directx, etc.. Then ran two different games :
I get about HALF the FPS i got on the X230 with HD4000.. WTF!!? I tried looking around in BIOS, power settings.. But i can't see what's wrong; there must be something though, something big!!

How many RAM modules do you have? Single channel memory badly hits integrated graphics performance.

The unit has 4GB in a single channel.. Never heard about that before, you think it could lower the performance that much, cutting more than half of it..?!
-
Integrated graphics don't have their own memory and rely on sharing memory space with system RAM. So it's certainly possible, given how dependent iGPUs are on it.
-
I'm reading it's about 20-30% decrease. Here as i said, it's more like +50%.. Which make me doubt! Anyways, that new unit (T450) is said to have DDR3L but i can't see about voltage in Aida64 (just checked); would it be dangerous to try adding DDR3 (non L) which i already have in hand here? I must use DDR3L?

Yes, you have to use DDR3L memory.

I got it and installed it : indeed, it totally changes performances! However, i'm still on the HD4000 level, not more, while it should be.. What's wrong?

Benchmark both notebooks using a standard software tool, like Futuremark 3DMark.
Then you can compare the scores to what is typical for those notebooks. We run 3DMark 11 and 3DMark Fire Strike in our reviews, so you can compare your scores with what we got with the T450s.
The scores you'll get won't directly translate into real-life games, but they'll at least let you know whether the results are within what's considered normal for your hardware.

Thanks for the tip, i'll try. However, if some people here, and i'm sure there is, have/had thinkpads with hd4000 & now also have one with hd5500, please tell us wether what i report happens to you too or not I don't think the unit is defective at all..

Late reply. That's what i said, bench shows much higher performances.. So it's hard to explain why i get lower!

Yes, HD 5500 should be MUCH better. Something is wrong.
Intel HD 5500 (Mobile 0.95 GHz) vs HD 4000 (Mobile 1.25 GHz)
Userbenchmark Effective 3D Gaming GPU Speed: 7.88% vs 4.84%
Intel HD 5500 (Mobile 0.95 GHz) - 217th / 506
Intel HD 4000 (Mobile 1.25 GHz) - 293rd / 506
HD5500 has lower performance than HD4000..?!
