If you can hear your HD, is that a problem? I have a 1.5 year old T60.

Sometimes I hear a tick, tick, tick sound and sometimes a whirring (fan?).

    Thanks!

Did you hear this since the beginning? If yes, then it's normal. Some HDDs are louder than others, the tick sound is just the sound made by the head arm. But if it only started making ticking noise recently, then there may be a problem.

You can run PC-Doctor to test it if you like.
