This may seem like a stupid question but I had this laptop for half a year now and I only recently noticed the two mesh-like grille-like objects on the front of the laptop. I can't for the life of me figure out what they are or remember reading anything about them. Can anyone tell me what is their purpose?

Thats weird. My X200 doesn't have anything like that. They look like speaker or Mic covers to me. My X200 has only 1 speaker under the laptop and there is no grill.

My x200 Tablet has those as well. I don't think they serve any purpose except possibly airflow.

they're for the speakers.   they help project high frequencies toward the user for better sound reproduction.

The two holes where the net/grills are located are for the Ultrabase docking station holding clips.

In other words, when you mount the X200 on the Ultrabase you first position the X200 so that the wholes are in line with the Ultrabase clips and hooked - after which you snap it in place with the bottom docking interface connector.

I am not sure but I beleve the net/grill serves as connectivity material to the metal part of the ultrabase clips. On the X60/X61 there is no grill but rather just some metal which touches the metal clips on the X6 Ultrabase.

    See attached pictures.

clearly i misread the photo above.   i was looking at the slots, not the parts circled in blue (which is what i missed seeing the first time).   what's circled is a screen, not a grille.

Jabba, thank you for your answer. That's funny if they are just for mounting clips I don't understand why the screen is soft to the touch.

I think they are soft to the touch to enable easier connectivity to the metal part of the docking station clips. As mentioned, on the X61 the holes contain a small piece of metal which is slightly "springy" also to enable connect to the metal parts of the X6 Ultrabase clips. I am not sure but I believe the metal to metal is because of electrostatic reasons.

Or on the X200(s) the screen could just be a way of covering the holes to avoid dust coming in.
