Great Deals on Lenovo Legion Y530

Picked up a Legion Y530 since there are great sales going on right now with 4th of July coming up.

Picked up this laptop out the door with a 2 year on-site and accidental damage warranty for $1,147 before tax (used coupon SAVEMORE). What a steal for a entry level gaming laptop.

It has a i7-8750H, 16gb of ram, 15.6" 1080p IPS display (60hz), 1050ti, and a 128gb PCIe SSD + 1TB 5400 hard drive. My biggest gripe is the absence of thunderbolt for a possible eGPU setup but I can personally live with it.

I was surprised at the decent hardware specs in this coupled with the thin bezel and aethestics found only in much, much more expensive laptops.

I'm excited to give this a try and will report back on how it goes when I receive it. Most curious on the 1050ti's performance, coming from a 1070 from the GS65. I'm expecting low/medium settings to get 60fps on the same games, but that will be ok for portable gaming for me.

Looking at that exact model. Can you please share Cinebench numbers and temps with the stress test in HWinfo? Feel free to comment if it thermal throttles or have power throttling. All the best.

 

Will do man. I'll report back temps after stress testing. I'm expecting to undervolt the CPU like I've had to do with the i7-8750H on the MSI GS65 and GS63. I like my max temps to be lower 80's. Have you seen Dave Lee's review of this laptop on YouTube?

Thanks buddy. Yes , I watched his review, but very simple as it is a sample unit, same with laptopmedia unit which outperforms most other competitors

 

I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about this laptop, huge improvement aesthetically , just wish you could configure it with a 1060Max Q.
Would love to hear impressions and gaming results, it really is much better in my eyes than other entry level gaming laptops.

Joking.....but it’d would be nice to hear some impressions , last couple of Lenovo’s I’ve had the screens were decent but I’d call them average , decent colors but should have been brighter so I’m hoping they improved in this department

 

I’m curious on this machine. Many requests to cover this but I just can’t seem to see what’s so great about it for its price.

I would not purchase this version now since we should get a new model with GTX 11xx GPU’s later in the year:

That’s what I hear. 1160 in the y730 is a possibility.

Either way I just can’t seem to pull the trigger on the y530 unless it was just a bit cheaper.

 

Sorry for the late reply folks, I had a wedding in another state I was attending and just now got to test out the laptop for the past couple of days.

I am really happy and impressed with this laptop. Just to give you an idea I was cross shopping this gaming laptop with the MSI GS63 and GS65, both Bestbuy versions. I utlimately chose this one because of the price, thin bezel screen & lightweight form, and I was able to get a 2 year in-home & accidental warranty for hundreds and hundreds of dollars less from the other gaming laptops.

The 1050ti is able to run all the games I personally play on the PC. Some on high settings, others on medium. The games I play are: Battlefield 4/1, Sea of Thieves, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite, CSGO, Overwatch, WoW, and other indie/older games that don't really challenge the 1050ti. The laptop handles all these games at 1080p with 60fps just fine, and the games look fine. I was spoiled with the 1070 in the GS65 ($2200 after tax) but I'm fine with lowering the graphics to maintain the fps.

The other reason I really like this laptop is that it feels sturdy and well built. When I was handling the GS65 it felt like I was holding glass. It was a sexy laptop but just too fragile. I couldn't see it physically hold up past 2 years without something happening. This laptop still has that thin form while still feeling very sturdy in the hands. Opening the lid feels very supportive and hinges feel strong unlike the GS65. Plus, I have the 2 year accidental warranty that give me a huge peace of mind if anything were to go wrong.

Laptop noise and fan noise is on the same level as the other gaming laptops, but my sister has said this one is the quietest out of the 3 I purchased. I don't think this will be a problem if I find myself wanting to play a quick match in a coffee or bookshop.

Display is not bad. It's a ~$1000 laptop so I wasn't expecting much, but I am still impressed. It was not as bright as the GS65, it was on par with the GS63. I was really happy with the white's. Looking at spreadsheets for work and scrolling through webpages I'm able to look at everything clearly. Nothing to complain about how games looked either. After using a 144hz, going back to 60hz is a bummer, but again for the price point of this laptop I can't complain. I can always buy an external if I really wanted.

CPU temps have been solid, BUT I did undervolt by only -125mv, and limited the GHZ to 4.0ghz (left turbo setting on though). I am not comfortable with 90C+ temps and have undervolted every i7-8750H i've had in my possession. Max temps I've seen in a 2 hour gaming sesh is 83C, this is much lower than the 85-89C I was seeing on the GS63 and GS65 that had heavier undervolts. I've never had to use Lenovo's cooler boost yet to keep temps in control, they have been fine on auto.

I was unimpressed with the 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD I got. If I were to go back, I would have chose a 512GB SSD with a 1TB HDD. I can only fit like 1 or 2 big games on the SSD before it gets full. Regardless, it's nice to have for a quick bootup. Quick note: Bestbuy version of this Lenovo Y530 does not have the SSD.

The keyboard really surprised me. Really happy with it. If you get a chance to feel the GS63 and GS65 in bestbuy, the Y530's keyboard feels more like the GS63, which I liked more. Deeper travel and satisfying to press down on. No RGB lighting on this keyboard but I am happy with the standard white backlit keyboard (3 settings, High, low, off)

Overall I had to make some sacrifices to the video card and forced to lower settings compared to other laptops - but I really wanted a thin bezel screen laptop that could also game decently. I think I found the one! I don't like to benchmark my laptops but let me know if you have any questions I can help answer!

 

I saw this in person at BB. I looks awesome! I'd like to see what the temps do uncapped too for the CPU and GPU. Any fan control via hardware button or software? Can I max the fans out at the push of a button?

 

The CPU temps were reaching 90C without any undervolts, just like the other laptops with this I tested too. I'll check GPU temps this evening when I game some more I'm curious about that. Lenovo doesn't have the fan control and nifty software that MSI does but there is a cooling boost shortcut (Control + Shift + 1) that will max out the fans if you need it

how about it battery performance? how long it last after full charge?

 

Realistically off the battery after a full charge, you are looking at 2-3 hours of non-gaming usage. It's not the greatest if you are without an outlet for an extended period of time. You will get about 1 hour or less if you game without the charger - keep in mind gaming performance will also be compromised off the battery
