I just got it and I only paid $650 US, with the docking station. It is in mint condition too.

i have been playing around with it, and all I have to say is that it is an awesome little machine. I am blown away by it, actually.

Ill post some comparison pics against my MBP to show it off :D.

    I absolutely love it.

So I guess I finally got my first thinkpad...and it turned out to be a tablet! My next major desktop replacement laptop will definitely be a thinkpad.

Check out ebay. I bought a X61t for my sister for like $770 + 14% off with live cash back about a month ago. There were some cheaper ones but this one was new and the guy was local so I was able to pick it up. $650 with dock sounds like a steal.

I bough it locally off of craigslist. The seller originally asked for $850, but I traded him 2 used cell phones, and an ipod nanochromatic 8 gb + 650 for it.

I won the ipod in a school raffle so I didn't need it.

    And here are some pictures.

    Both were at full brightness.

Also, is it possible to puncture the screen if you press too hard accidentally?

    Very nice price!

I think it would be less "puncturing" it than scratching the screen surface - but you'd have to press pretty hard to do that.

Puncture seems highly unlikely. However, the screen surface will likely develop some moderate scratches with extended use. If you are concerned you may want to consider a screen protector. However, I run my x200T naked.

Your old MBP may have a brighter screen, but I assure you the x61T display is of higher quality (Hydis FFS is very tough to beat).

Yeah it was unplugged...does that dim the screen?

The resolution is only xga. 1024x768 or something. But the 4:3 aspect ratio makes up for this in my opinion.

THe seller reformatted the X61, but I don't think he installed all the drivers.

For example, in tablet mode it does not automatically rotate the screen as I rotate the computer.

    Am I missing something?

By default, ThinkPads are set to not allow running at full brightness on battery. It is a configurable option in the BIOS (F1 before boot) and one of the first things I adjust (I like full control of my machine no matter the circumstance).

The vast majority of the x61T were of the XGA variant. Only a small percentage were available with SXGA+ (and they had serious supply problems for most of the x61T's life).

I ran into this problem too because I formatted it the second I got it. I think you have to install ActiveProtection for the tilt sensor, but I don't remember if that was the fix. Google it I think I found the answer eventually that way. Honestly though I preferred manually rotating it with a button.

You need to install the APS driver for auto-rotate to work. In addition, you generally have to manually enable and calibrate the rotation.

On my x200T this option is located in the Tablet preferences menu (press the shortcut button on the bezel and adjust preferences). You should find a check box for active rotate and a button to calibrate it. In addition, you can enable resuming the system upon removing the pen from the silo (one of my favorite features) from this same menu.

Nice, I found that to work nicely.

Question, being a tablet and all, I'm going to be using it on the go. Is it ok to have it stay on while I walk around, move it around etc? Or will this shorten the lifespan. I already extended the waranty to 3 years total, so I covered my butt there. But I can't protect myself from the random failure from a HD malfunction or something to do with the mobo.

**I don't really care about the HD, as I am going to replace it with an SSD.

I carry mine like a clipboard as I walk around from time to time. As long as you have a firm grip (i.e. you don't drop it on the ground) it should be fine.

Even an HDD will likely be okay due the the Active Protection System (the accelerometer will detect a substantial change in movement and dynamically park the HDD). However, an SSD is a preferred solution as it is immune to vibration (APS knows this and will NOT attempt to park an SSD).

The only thing that would remain even a remote concern would be mobo flex due to the gravitational force on the chasis as it is held with one hand (this was a problem with the T4x). However, due to the x61 Tablet's small cross section and interior reinforcements through the roll cage, I doubt that motherboard flex would be a serious problem with the x61 Tablet (I've never heard of it happening).

great, I guess I wont worry about it too much then. Also, the write-to-text function is truly amazing. It does an amazing job of recognizing even my worst handwriting. you could basically do everything in tablet mode if you don't mind writing Very cool technology, and will truly be useful in my life. Also, if I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7, would all of the tablet functions still be there? or will I have to download them from lemon?

I am running Windows 7 on my x200T (my sig says build 7048, but it's really build 7100 [the RC] 64-bit).

The digitizer is detected out of the box and works fine. In fact, the tablet experience is actually improved significantly (read this detailed post about the improved TIP on the Engineering Windows 7 blog).

The only thing that causes any problems at the moment is some of the finer and more specific Lenovo drivers. You will have to manually install the tablet shortcut menu and spend a bit of time getting bezel buttons to work (hopefully this will improve when Lenovo releases Windows 7 drivers and ThinkVantage software later this month).
