After spending 3 months shopping for a new laptop that could replace my trusty and amazing Sony Z610, I decided to go for the X220 after finding a good deal. The X220 doesn't have a DVD drive like my Z did but the screen and the processor upgrade will be welcome. I don't do much gaming so having a better graphics card isn't a requirement. I was toying with the idea of getting a 220T with outdoor screen but the lack of USB 3.0 really killed it for me unfortunately.

Anyway, here are the specs of the new machine:

    X220 with IPS display
    i7 2620
    160gb Intel SSD
    8 gb RAM
    720p camera
    Bluetooth 3.0
    Win 7 professional
    9 cell battery
    3 year onsite warranty

Got it for $975 with shipping included. Thought it was too good to pass up. What do you guys think? It really took me some time to find something suitable to replace my Z.

That certainly is a better deal than I got. I just recently got an X220, i5-2520m, 4GB, Win 7 Pro, Fingerprinter Reader, 720p Camera, IPS, 9cell battery, bluetooth for $955 thats with tax. Your deal looks awesome.

I'm sure prices will keep coming down with Ivy Bridge on the horizon. How do you like it so far? My main concern is the lack of a DVD drive since I've gotten so used to that on all my other computers, but I guess they are becoming less common. How is the weight with the 9 cell battery? I figure an extra 0.4 pounds is tolerable if it will give me an extra 3 hours or so of battery power. I'm sort of using this computer as a bridge until next year when both Ivy Bridge and Windows 8 will be out and optimized. May spring for an X220T (or whatever the model will be called) then.

Great configuration for the price! You can pick up an external ODD for $20ish off Newegg; they occasionally have some pretty good sales. I got an Asus drive for my X120e, my brother's Inspiron Mini 10v, and dad's X220 a while back.

I love it. The lack of a DVD drive isn't much of a problem since a lot of programs can be downloaded off the internet. I actually like how it doesn't have a DVD drive because on my brother's T420, I always accidentally hit the eject button on the side and the tray always pops out. Just a minor annoyance for me.

As for the weight with the 9cell, using my kitchen scale, 3lb 11oz, and it really doesn't feel heavy at all. I think my Asus Transformer feels heavier.

Thanks everyone! If the new Z hadn't been completely butchered by Sony, my decision would have been slightly easier. What were they thinking when they designed it?! Haha. Well regardless, the Lenovo is an excellent alternative and the screen is amazing (seen it in person). I'm looking forward to receiving it and playing with it. I also have an Android tablet with ICS and desktop but laptops are just so much easier to do stuff with when you are on the couch, in coffee shops, or in the airplane/hotel.

    I got one too! :D

The SSD and the 3-year warranty makes this a very nice deal! I got my config, minus the SSD and 4 GB of RAM, for $720 shipped with only a 1-year depot warranty.

I'm jealous you have the Z12. They are so hard to come by and was considering just trading up my 610 for a Z11-3 but couldn't find one for a reasonable price. Best laptop made...too bad Sony messed it up in the newest iteration!

I got mine from the Outlet during Christmas. At the time, Lenovo was running some sort of a promotion that ended not long ago. A lot of very nice machines for a low price. I saw many X220t machines for ~$600-$700.

There will probably be a flood of outlet machines in the coming month or so with the recent motherboard issue too. Btw, the outlet site has been down for a few weeks now. What's going on?

Curious about this too. I hope it isn't major! Good thing this comes with the 3 year warranty just in case.

Probably referring to this. I wouldn't worry about it at this point though, since the issue has been rectified and it only affected a subset of machines produced last year between November and December.
