With everyone's advice on the forum, last week I picked up a R61 nicely spec'd with T7300, 2gb ram, 160gb, WXGA+, 4965agn, BT, webcam for $1050 (using the educational discount.)
Nice machine but I was so disappointed though with Vista. I was expecting some compatibility issues and sure enough I couldn't get my VPN working. But the major surprise was how slow it responded. So, I tried a clean install. Improved but still very sluggish.
Finally, I installed XP using the guides on the forum. Let me tell you - now this thing is blazing! I'm sure I'll move to Vista at some point, but for those of you with similar problems, give XP a try - it works and it is fast.
(Separately, I did not have a copy of XP so I used the reinstall disc from my old laptop and the product activation code on its bottom. Seemed to activate fine and still working. Hope this is not a problem. I'm not using the old laptop anymore so still only one active installation...)

I don't think MS cares about if you have a oem or retail version of xp, both activate on new machines without a problem.
I'm curious if MS is going to enforcing the differences between retail and oem with Vista now. Anyone try switching a oem key on a different machine?
Got my new R61 - removed Vista
