I just received my T61 today, 5 days EARLIER the the
estimated shipping date, I might add. It is a T61 7300,
15.4 screen, 160 GB Hard Drive with upgraded wireless
    and 512 ram.

I have never owned a lap top computer before so bare
    with me.

First off, I don't see a cd of the Vista software. Do they
not include a copy or a start up disk of any sorts?

Is there any advice on what I should do during the first
time I fire her up? I know I need to install the 4GB
of ram I bought, but should I start it up first. Are there any tests I should do to make sure everything is functioning properly?

I thought I read in here something about testing my new RAM after installation. Could someone give me the exact steps again? I am taking the whole box over to a friend so he can help me set it up and install the memory.

I feel like a new mom who doesn't want to hurt her first child. This baby came so early, that I didn't even get a chance to fix up the nursery (office) and set up my beautiful roll top desk and ditch the ugly computer desk in the same room. :)

Thanks for any help or advice,

    Kimberlee

No CDs are included - there's a hidden partition on the HD that has the restore image in case you need it.

I'd definitely start it up first, get it running, and make sure everything is OK. Once you've determined that, you can open up the bottom and replace the RAM.

T61 should come with "Vista Anytime Upgrade" DVD, which can essentially be used as Vista DVD.

The recovery medias are not shipped and you can make your own.

I installed the addtional memory immediately after I opened the box. Read the manual and follow the procedure putting the memory in, then power up you laptop. If the system recognize the more than 3 gb memory, you will be fine.

    From the Thinkvantage Access Help:

"To install an SO-DIMM, do the following:

Before you start, do the following:

Turn off the computer; then disconnect the ac adapter and all cables from the computer.

Close the computer display, and turn it over as in the animation.

    Remove the battery.

Loosen the screws that hold the palm rest in place.
Turn the computer over, and open the computer display.
Lift up the palm rest and flip it over.
If the two SO-DIMMs are already in the memory slots, remove an SO-DIMM to make room for the new one by pressing out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time. Be sure to save it for future use.

Find the notch on the contact edge side of the SO-DIMM you are installing.
Attention: To avoid damaging the SO-DIMM, do not touch its contact edge.
With the notched end of the SO-DIMM toward the contact edge side of the socket, insert the SO-DIMM, at an angle of about 20 degrees, into the socket; then press it in firmly.
Pivot the SO-DIMM downward until it snaps into place.
Make sure that the SO-DIMM is firmly fixed in the slot and cannot be moved easily.

Reinstall the palm rest. Then close the display and turn the computer over.
    Tighten the screws.
Attention: When you have added or upgraded an SO-DIMM, do not use your computer until you have reinstalled the palm rest.
Put the battery back in place, turn the computer over again, and reconnect the cables.

To make sure that the SO-DIMM is installed correctly, do as follows:

    Turn the computer on.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left of the screen, press the ThinkVantage(R) button. The Rescue and Recovery(TM) screen opens.
Click Access BIOS. The System Restart Required window is displayed.
Click Yes. The computer restarts, and the BIOS Setup Utility screen opens. The "Installed memory" item shows the total amount of memory installed in your computer.
For example, if your computer has 256 MB of memory and you install a 256-MB SO-DIMM in it, the quantity shown in "Installed memory" should be 512 MB."

    Hope that helps.

Go to ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery and there will be an option for creating your own back up CDs. You are only allowed to make one copy of them so don't lose them.

My T61 I just got yesterday didn't come with a vista anytime upgrade, I would like to get a fresh install on here but it seems like I would need to get a disk from my school.

I hope my school wont charge to much.

Lenovo products that come pre-installed with software do not ship with that software on a CD. This only applies to software that is pre-installed, such as MS Windows whatever, and MS Office.
You can always give technical support a call and ask them to ship you a recovery disk.......for a small price.

What is this a new fad? Everyone who gets a new T61 starts a "now what?" thread.

    Chicken butt.

I don't need as much disk space or RAM because I don't record, edit, and sell nude webcam clips.

I believe you have to sign for it so they won't just leave it at your door. Just keep checking the tracking info provide in the email they send you when your computer is shipped and you will know when it is coming so you can be waiting.

You could also just buy one from here for $5:
    http://www.compusa.com/products/pro...le&cm_ven=froogle&cm_cat=&cm_pla=&cm_ite=feed

UPDATE: when you "order" this DVD is that you get an email saying how to *download* the SW. I don't know if they actually ship anything in the mail...
