I ordered 8/28, and just got the machine. Lenovo had sent me an email stating that there would be a delay, but looks like they were wrong! Plus they have yet to charge my card, so this might turn out to be quite the deal!! :D

So far I've run the windows update, removed Symantec and Google software, and then run the thinkpad update. I've installed Firefox, Avast, Spyboy S&D, Ad-Aware, and Hi-Jack This.

I know some people were questioning the quality of the 14" monitor w/ the ATI card. I think it looks pretty good. Everything is crisp and clear, I don't see any dead pixels. Viewing way off center isn't all that bad either- certainly not as bad as on a T42. The bottom .5 inch or so of the screen is a bit brighter (light leakage?) but I have to really look to notice it. Actually I don't notice it at all now- its more of an issue when the screen is black. Matte screen, so I'm using this with all the windows open and no glare!

The resolution (1400X1050) is a bit small for my taste, but I've increased the font size to compensate.

The laptop beat my extra stick of RAM by a day, but so far so good. Of course, I haven't installed or run any memory hogs yet. I'll install Office tonight and try running that with a few other programs.

Too bad I have to eat now. And go to class in an hour. And work tomorrow.

    Some more comments:

My screen does ripple a bit when I flex the cover- this doesn't happen on my fiance's T42.

The DVD RAM is running now, installing Office. While its not loud, it does cause a decent amount of vibration.

Really? Mine came FAT32, but converted immediately. I don't remember if it gave me a choice. My screen doesn't ripple at all, either, though it does flex more than I expected it all flexes as one piece.

I do have a bit of light leakage at the bottom, and up to the left about half way. It's only noticeable on a dark screen, though, I don't know how I'll feel when I get in a console. I haven't found any dead pixels.

Why is it good to convert the HDD and how do you do this? Please enlighten me. Thanks!

Just go to the Command Prompt and execute the command:

    C:\> CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs

Where C: is a name of the drive you want to convert.

After machine re-boot conversion process will start and you'll have your FAT32 converted to NTFS without of data loss.

Thanks for the how...anyone have the why this is better? If I have to ask why, would I not benefit from the change?

    evilted,
Did your laptop ship on the estimated shipping date, when did it arrive relative to when they said it would? It looks like you got yours 2 weeks from order, my estimate is listed as two weeks from my order date. The wait is killing me.

I think that if the partition is FAT it should convert, or give you an option to convert on first boot. You could check in disk management to see if you are in fact using FAT or NTFS.

NTFS is journaled and much more robust. There's far less likelihood of data loss. FAT is still a little faster, however. I would use NTFS.

Mine did the same thing. One of the first questions I posted here was about the drives shipping as either FAT32 or NTFS- Qhs calmed me down by explaining that they ship as FAT32 but convert automatically when you power up for the first time.

I was really hoping the build would be similar to the T42- that thing doesn't ripple, flex, jiggle, wiggle, whatever. Its like the monolith from 2001. Can you imagine if the monkeys slowly approached the monolith, cautiously reached out their hands, touched it and saw it ripple, a la the T60? They would not have been impressed. They probably would've started laughing and the movie would have ended right then and there.

It did ship on the estimated shipping date, even though on that date the web "track your order" page stated that there would be a delay. The next day I received an email stating that my order shipped out on the estimated date, and the "track your order" page was updated, with the UPS tracking number. It got here within the 3-5 business days as well.

The wait is pretty terrible. When it shipped out, I was tracking the package obsessively. It was neat to see it go from Hong Kong to Korea to Alaska to Kentucky to NJ, though.

It's probably worth the wait, though. I bought from another source, and I got it in 4 business days. But they packaged it like they'd never sent a package before, and there does appear to be some damage to the chassis. Now I'll have to send it back to Lenovo for repairs. I have absolutely no faith in this company to go through an exchange process with them.

Besides, I'm too relieved that I got a Seagate hard drive, and I really love the Alps keyboard in this thing. I'd probably get stuck with a Chicony and a Fujitsu if I exchanged the thing.
