Hi! I got my brand new t400 yesterday and it worked like a charm! That is until I woke up this morning to realize that it can't even boot up now...

I plug the power cord in, I boot it up and many different things happen from that point, here are the possibilities:

    A) The Thinkpad screen appears, then laptop shuts down.

    B) I go pass the Thinkpad screen and Windows tells me it couldn't start and recommends me to go in repair mode. I choose the mode, it starts "searching for problems" and POOF! laptop shuts down.

    C) I click on Thinkpad button, I enter the rescue and recovery menu and POOF! laptop shuts down.

    D) I try to start in Safe Mode and POOF! laptop shuts down

What the hell do I do now? Is it a software or hardware problem? I contacted lenovo support and it was HORRIBLE, the guys is like: "You should uninstall the software you installed" How am I suppose to do so if I can't enter Vista?

    I installed:
    Warcraft 3
    World of Warcraft
    Google Chrome
    Thinkcenter Updates

Turn your machine on and check to see if you hear any faint beeps. Sometimes your bios will help you out. If you don't hear any beeps, try to start windows in safe mode to see if you can make it to windows. We'll go from there

No beeps can be heard and as I said: I cannot enter Safe Mode without the laptop shutting down....

If you are comfortable with it, try flipping the notebook over and reseating the RAM. Sometimes a loose connection causes the RAM to not work correctly or at all which causes system instability. Also, it is common for RAM to possible become unseated during shipping from the minor bumps it takes.

sounds like a heat issue, although i don't know why it would happen with a brand spankin' new tp ?

I agree with BBGus, test the RAM modules, if you have both slots occupied, try booting the laptop with only one DIMM, see if it works. Then the other one only. I doubt is an overheating issue. You may have to send the laptop to replacement

I don't know a ton about hardware, but it kind of reminds me of what would happen when I tried to boot my laptop and the battery was almost completely dead. Maybe there's some sort of power problem...

Certainly a hardware issue, even if there's software incompatibility you should be able to recover using Thinkvantage button.
See if you can test your RAM by burning a bootable disk image available at memtest.org
Also try removing the battery entirely and boot using only power cord.

Called Lenovo again today and got much better service, we pretty much tried everything to make it work. It seems I got an hardware problem because the laptop really shuts down at ANY random time, even in BIOS..(its not the RAM, I checked and the chips are well in place). Anyway I'll be sending it for repair....and I'll have to wait again...
Is it worth it or should I send it back to Lenovo and get a new laptop?

I think you should try repairing it, returning it will just give you a 15% restocking fee anyway

It is kind of stupid that they charge you 15% restocking fee, when I can in most cases walk into my local store (Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples & etc.) and exchange a defective consumer grade laptop within 30 days of purchase.

Instead with Lenovo you have to ship it in and wait for it to get repaired. If you want to exchange it you still have to wait, but now you get the privilege of paying 15% restocking fee.
