So yea, these words are spoken with a bit of premature nostalgia, but Apple is going a way that I don't agree with, and notwithstanding all the horrors of Foxconn and the truth about the new camps, but that's for another rant.

I've been looking some, and I think for a desktop replacement type deal that won't travel more than once or twice a year, it looks like the P series is what the W series used to be? Not sure if I've got that right.

I also like big screens, and with Thinkpad, it looks like the 17.3" is the largest and it's only available in the P line, is that correct? My last Thinkpad was a W700(/701?) series laptop.

I like a quad-core Core i7 (or i5, but quad!), a discrete graphics card, as well as an NVMe SSD. That's what I have now.

Is there a large Linux community that uses Thinkpads? One thing I'm not really looking forward to is returning to Windows, although there was a time when I loved Windows. All on my various and many Thinkpads throughout the 2000s. ;)

What else should I know? For example, when do Thinkpads typically get refreshed as a product line?

I have had nothing but Macs for the past 8 years and have been more or less happy, but like I said, I disagree more and more with Apple's politics and product quality seems to be lacking in some cases, although I have yet to experience any of that myself.

As a PC user, I was 100% devoted to Thinkpads for the longest time. So this is my first time back. Lenovo seems to be the leader amongst PC manufacturers? Now I'm just babbling...

At any rate, thanks a ton! This will be truly interesting for me! :)

Apple MacBook Air to be comes first on SSD.
From a windows user might be trying the new, in the past if I am not wrong all the windows laptops still running with traditional HDD.

I am the user since 2010 from Windows jump to Apple MacBook , because this is faster and never turn off power the battery still last for a month.

After last year 2017 , I had found my new toy from Lenovo ThinkPad it's completely to replaced my Apple devices.
In my experience on MacBook Pro 13 weight at 1.35kg.
The downside for MacOX seem like never improve for an over 8 years.

When comes to Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th gen 14inch weight just 1.15kg and the SSD still changeable, unlike Macbooks already soldered on board.
That's was death end for user who's needs more capacity and storages upgrade in future.

The ThinkPad's quality of build is superb with easier to access for repairs or replace SSD else, this is solve your issue on everything as you needs.

Against comes to Thinkpad trackpad has enter and select button key , it's help lot of time for highlight with copy n paste to solve your problems.
IF you comes from Mac family notebooks you may suffer on their trackpad.

Anyway still have lot of stuffs software like Google drive and OneDrive for free to shares all your data as well.

Once you are using you will find lot of Windows software more user friendly, another things is windows toggled for night reading mode is awesome for simple click and go.

Anyway just enjoy , if you come back to windows and ThinkPad's family here. :D

Discrete GPU will have trouble due to undersized 65w adapter, need 87w apple adapter to not throttle and that's expensive AF.

Models with discrete GPU will have thermal problems, can't be fixed with normal thermal paste.

Refresh, beginning of year, but CTO options are not available until much later down the months.

CPU frequency chart to determine if upgrade is worth or not

    i7 8650U: [4.2, 4.2, 3.9, 3.9]
    i7 8550U: [4.0, 4.0, 3.7, 3.7]
    i5 8350U: [3.6, 3.6, 3.6, 3.6]
    i5 8250U: [3.4, 3.4, 3.4, 3.4]
