I think Microsoft put out some preliminary spec, 512MB was the minimum. Of course the minumum for XP is 128MB, but I wouldn't want to run XP with such little memory.

i think what microsoft means by minimum 128 meg of ram is the most basic windows installation as in default configuration installation and then without anything in there. no applications, no games, nothing...

i hate it when new os always comes up with higher ram requirement especially vista which i believe is a giant leap from xp in terms of gui and such. that said we always have to upgrade our pc every two or three years and then again throw away some huge cash. on the other hand our old pc is only worth less than half the original price :( what a waste.

Almost the same system with 512 MB RAM costs 1949$ at Pcconnection. You may easily estimate how good the deal is. You need to add 512 MB RAM to the Pcconnection configuration, which costs 75$. You need to also add the tax, which might be around 100-150$. That amounts to around 500$ savings for your configuration. Do you know the actual model number for your system?

2GB should be the standard default for running Vista. Consider the 1GB DDR2sticks are going for $70 on newegg.com this should not be much of a financial setback.

Where did you come up with that? I haven't seen any official Vista requirements from M$ yet. The original belief was that Vista required discrete graphics, but Intel claims that 950 integrated will handle Vista. If 2GB is a req, that suggests that Vista will be an enourmous resource hog...so I'll be sticking with XP as long as possible.

I have tried the vista beta on 1 GB RAM. It works very nice. And it is still beta. I dont think you would require 2 GB of RAM just because you will be using VISTA. But on the other hand, the other programs such as the new office, new adobe products will ask for more RAM.

so far the official requirement for Vista is 512. of course, the requirement for XP is 128, and I have personal experience that it runs like junk on that. So you can expect to want at least a gig for Vista and typical programs, and probably over 2 for heavy use.

Windows XP doesn't even run great on XP. I'm basing my 2gb commment based on reviews I've reading stating that Vista took 800mb just idling on a desktop. I'm sure 1GB will work fine. 2GB will run excellent. Considering 60% Of the Vista consumer version is being rewritten, I think 2GB will be the standard for a solid notebook.
