Howdy there guys. I'm going to buy a T61p in a day or two, and I plan on ordering it with 1 gig of RAM and buying the other gig myself. Does Lenovo use a cruddy brand/will it throw a fit when I put in a stick that isn't from the exact same brand? Or will I be safe buying anything from Newegg?

Any 200-pin DDR2 SODIMM will work.

You should be safe from buying from newegg.com. Most of the notebooks these days don't have any problem using RAM modules which are from different manufacturers, but it may be a good thing to cover yourself with an acceptable returns policy. Also, have a look at the RAM Deals thread.

    Will do. Thanks guys.

EDIT: One more thing. Should I go for a CAS latency of 4 or 5?

I bought 4Gb (2 x 2gb) of crucial value select ram from newegg for my T60p. The Hynix ram that it comes with is pretty decent. I actually installed it in a friends T61 so that he could have 2gbs. For what its worth although the lower CAS latency ram is technically faster you won't necessarily see the performance gains but definitely the price increase if you do go down that route. Stick with the CAS 5.

My Lenovo came with Hynix CAS 5 ram. Different companies like OCZ, Corsair, Mushkin, and Geil use ICs from different manufacturers such as Hynix or Samsung. They then re-brand the ram. Having lower latencies might improve synthetic benchmark scores, but it will not give significant performance increases (i.e. CAS 5 vs. CAS 4). CAS 4 will probably be more expensive than CAS 5.
