How do you go about getting them to hand over some sort of restore media, or a OEM windows xp pro install disc to use with the key you paid for? The laptop config I purchased does not have a burner cd or dvd, and as such can't really make backups using the onboard restore utility.
I am planning on wiping the thing when I get it to go with custom partitions for a linux and xp pro install, and would enjoy being able to still use that windows key on the bottom of the laptop. Will a run of a mill xp pro w/sp2 install disc work with it, or are IBM keys pretty unique for ibm xp pro discs?
Also, I found the part number for the restore disc on the website, but I can't order it. Any idea on cost, or if you could even buy them?

If you have access to an external burner you could make the discs that way. They used to give you the discs if you asked withing 30 days of purchasing the laptop, but I don't know if they are doing that anymore. Doesn't hurt to ask. If you have to buy them, I believe they are $45. It is unlikely your key will work with a OEM XP CD. If you use the CD's key, Microsoft will probably validate for you, but you will have to call.

I plan on calling when and if my z60m finally ships out
Don't have any external burner at the moment, althought I might be able to build something if needed. Probably have the various bits laying around from past projects. -

Just call them and ask them to send it to you. I could have burned it but I still asked them to send me one, which they rightfully did. I just wanted the ones with IBM logo on it.

yep, just call them and they will ship it for free. they ought to have shipped it with the system itself.

Cool. Might ask them.
