It's been about a month with my T60, and overall it's really great.
Thing is - I noticed I started getting zapped when swiping my finger with the fingerprint reader.
This obviously is quite annoying, as I'd rather not get zapped.

Does anyone know a simple solution to this?

I would also like to know if there's a way to completely disable the fingerprint reader.

    Thanks!

Just open the case and disconnect the fingerprintreader from the motherboard :)

Damn, that would really suck, to get zapped every time.

I get zapped on my work sometimes (static) and I hate it. It makes my whole back full of sweat of fear.

    Answer: Don't touch it. :p

Seriously, you should just send it in to have it repaired. If there is some sort of short in the wiring who knows what other problems it can cause.

If you insist on removing it's functionality then go into the device manager and uninstall the driver by clicking on "Biometric" then right clicking "TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor" click uninstall. Next go to the control panel -> uninstall programs -> and remove the "ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software".

someone correct me if i am wrong, but i thought the fingerprint reader was connected to the motherboard by the same cable as the touchpad.

Yea..i had to take off the cover to install extra ram. There are 2 seperate wires that connect into the same thing on the motherboard from the touchpad and fingerprint reader

Will this prevent the fingerprint reader from being on - thus eliminating the buzz when my finger slips in that direction?

I'd rather not take it into repair, as I brought it from the US to Israel, and I don't know how the warranty works etc.

Then open it up and disconnect it. A software solution might not disable it completely.

nope, it will still get power, it will just make it unavailable to the OS if you remove it from hardware profiles.

    Try it.
Disconnecting the wire from the mobo will also disconnect the touchpad. They are on the same plug. Maybe the wire can be disconnected right at the FPR?

You can always cut the wire underneith to the FP reader...(just make sure you put some electrical tape on the end)...therefore, keeping the touchpad funcitonal

ehh I would not cut the wire. Just contact an IBM representative and see what other solutions are available.

This is really a funny problem! This reminds me of the time when we were kids and me and my brothers used to p... on electric wire fences around cow paddocks in Switzerland to prove how brave we are... :)

But seriously: When I got my new T61p (15.4''), I noticed, that the front plastic cover was standing out ~1mm on the right side. I foundt, that this was caused by one of the two wires, that connect the touchpad and fingerprint reader, which was not completely fitted into the grove, in which it was supposed to be. When I put it back into the correct place, I was that the plastic isolation was slightly damaged by the compression between the lower plastic notch and the upper cover.
Maybe this is, what also happened in your case?

(Sorry for my poor English, I hope you're able to understand without pic what I'm trying to describe!)

I think 'wutz' has the best guess to what may be going on, although I could do without the childhood memories. If that doesn't solve the problem, your best bet is to contact Lenovo.
