    Getting a Thinkpad after all

Well, as it turns out, I am going to get another Thinkpad, and stay with it this time. It will be an X31 or T42, and, at this point, it doesn't really matter which.

    Here are the reasons:

I posted earlier that I had returned a couple of Thinkpads, and that I was unhpappy with the LCD display. However, I am also unhappy with the glare from the Fujitsu and other glossy displays.

The bottom line in going with a Thinkpad is several factors:

1.) Other than the display, the Thinkpads are as solid a notebook as I have ever seen. The keyboards are great!

2.) They hold their value VERY well, and I am someone who keeps computer items a short period of time. The resale value will be of great importance to me when I decide to move on to something new in a year or so. This good resale value is based on the Thinkpad's true quality, and its perceived quality by so many others.

3.) I am not a gamer, so having the latest and greatest GPU, etc. is not a factor whatsoever. A Thinkpad will do fine until something better comes along.

I will let you know which model I end up with.

Thank you to everyone in these forums that has put up with me for these months of indecision.

Good choice, I agree, there is no notebook on the market that's built as well as a thinkpad.

At this point I have received two Thinkpads, and already sent the T42 XGA back. VERY poor screen. I may keep the X31, just not sure yet. Not a great screen, but better than the T42 by a lot.
I can't do high resolution or glare with my eyes. They just can't take it!

Anyway, the T42 is gone. Still deciding on the X31.

Sorry to hear that, What exactly was wrong with the thinkpad XGA display? I've only used the SXGA (1400x1050)flexview and I'm really happy with it.

Washed out, almost no viewing angles at all, very pale color, etc.
Tried several of them, all the same.

    Quite disappointed.

    Update:

However... the X31 screen was better than the T42 XGA screen.
The T42 XGA was totally unacceptable, no way I would use it.
I am still considering keeping the X31, even as I have it boxed up for return.
Even though the screen on it falls below my expectations, I am still weighing the many positives of the X31 against the negative of the display.

ok, I see. I regret that I did not return my T40 in time.

But you will pay the shipment fee if you return, right?

Assuming that you order direct from IBM (like I have),
if you find dead pixels in the first 30 days send it back!
Have them send you another one.

    After 30 days, I don't know.

Also, if you order from a retailer and not IBM directly, I don't know.

I am also a fan of ThinkPad. It's sooo great!

But I am also not satisfied with the screen of ThinkPad. I orderd a T40 last year and found 3 dead pixels on the screen. Crazy!

What will you guys do when you find bad pixels? Do you think that's a big problem??

Does anybody know any retailers who can guarantee no dead pixels? Or what will you do when you find dead pixels in your new ThinkPad?

Looks like I ended up with a 23795VU.
    - 14.1" XGA (what I always wanted, never wanted high resolution)
    - upgrading to 7200 rpm Hitachi 60 gig
    - came with 512MB (upgrading to 1GB)
    - 64MB ATI 9000 card (all I need for what I do)
    - extra battery free
    - SPP pricing (no big deal, 10 percent off, same as VISA card pricing)
    - Upgrade to 3 year Thinkpad Protection (accidental damage coverage)
I am happy with it to this point, I have another 2 weeks to decide.

aamsel, sounds like a good configuration, hope it works out for you and decide to hold onto this notebook. Personally, I don't think there's a better laptop market...well until the ThinkPad T43 hits the shelves that is [8D]
