Over the past 2 weeks or so my fan would make loud noises as though it was getting stuck or hitting something. It would fix itself when the fan kicked into high gear. Then one day it just stopped. Restarted laptop, fan error.

Compressed air wasn't working, so I took out the keyboard and blew directly at the fan causing it to spin. Fixed, right?

Kind of. I turned it on, and it worked. However, I'm getting the same fan error fairly frequently now. Sometimes it's fixed by blowing out the exhaust, other time I have to take out the keyboard and blow it until the fan spins.

Any idea what is causing this?

Check/resit the cable, if doesn't help, get a replacement fan.

If I had a buck for every fan that Lenovo swapped on one of my T410 units, I could take my family to Burger King right now...:D

Known weak spot on these machines, the fan, that is.

T410 had a known issue with premature fan failure.

Thanks guys. How difficult is a DIY replacement? Where would I buy the fan?

It's not that difficult, check the HMM:

    Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T410, T410i

As for the source of the replacement, try feebay...make sure to have the correct FRU number - which will be in the HMM as well...

    Good luck.

    Guys,

I want to try and give this one more shot before I pay $100 for a new fan and make the replacement myself.

The thing is, the fan does run occasionally. I haven't discovered a pattern as to when it runs, but it does work sometimes. It makes a light buzzing sound, which it never did before, but when I remove the keyboard and blow compressed air into the fan, it spins with no obvious obstructions.

What else can I check to make sure that I'm not calling it in too early?

How did you come up with $100? Most places (in the U.S. since I don't know where you are) have it for $40 and under...

    Just replace the poor thing...

Same symptoms with my X301. Like you I put off replacing the fan for some time...likely too long. I have now replaced the fan & everything is quiet & fine again.
