I have a Wireless LAN PC Card that I am trying to use in a ThinkPad R31 2656-2GU that is running Windows XP Professional. I have tried installing the drivers from the CD that came with the card but when I check in Device Manager there is an exclamation next to the entry for the Wireless PC Card. I would try contacting the manufacturer but I can not find any contact information in the material that came with the card. Actually, I can not find any indication of who the manufacturer even is. The entry in Device Manager for the card is "IEEE 802.11g Wireless LAN CardBus Adapter". I have tried using several driver websites to identify missing drivers on my pc (which they do for free) but they require payment to actually download the driver. I have links to images of the front and back of the card below. I am hoping someone can tell me how I can determine what the correct driver for the card is and where I can download it, for free.

Did you try Windows update? Where did you get the card?

The MAC address of a card should identify the vendor on the next to the most significant byte and there are vendor lists on the net. However these cards are OEMed a lot and there's a good chance the card's actual vendor is obscured.

But there's something to know. There aren't many actual manufacturers. Chances are it's not an atheros or Intel. My guess is that it is Broadcom.

    Zaz,

I erred in the last post. I said they are many manufacturers and meant to say there are not many manufacturers of the WLAN chips themselves.

Broadcom, Atheros and Intel are the main one's. Atheros shows up in quality cards. Broadcom shows up in Cheap. Intel shows up with Intel chipsets. There are hawkings, netgear and linksys but none of them flood the market with OEM chips.

I've used them all in the last six months. I haven't had a problem with any of them, at least in Windows. The Athernos I had in the X61s ran a bit hot though the X61 is fairly thin. The F560 with the Broadcom card I had planned to make my Linux box, but since Broadcom offers poor linux support, I ditched that idea.

I have tried Windows Update, and it installed several updates specific to my ThinkPad, but it did not resolve the problem with the Wireless card.

I have tried right-clicking the wireless card in Device Manager and selecting Update Driver, then I select to connect to Windows Update to search for software but when it is done searching it says that it could not find a better match for my hardware than what is already installed.

I also tried downloading the driver located at the website below, but it would not properly install.

How about PC Wizard or googling the part number on the back?
