I'm thinking of ordering the Y550+240m if I can't get a better deal on Black Friday/Cyber Monday:

    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...002706:&smid=653343E0DE54435882FABC3CE1BC569A

Anyone know how good this would be for a budget gamer? Here is a video of it playing GTAIV:

NFS Shift Max Settings on Y550+130m:

Looks like it works just fine to me. xD But I was wondering what people who actually own this laptop think?

So you think they would be fine for gaming? Looks great to me. XD I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience gaming with one.

My current laptop can barely play games on minimum settings. x( (20-25 fps on total minimum settings for Killing Floor).

What is your current notebook and GPU? The 240M is the top of the mainstream GPUs and should be able to handle most games at low/medium resolution (WXGA/+) at medium/high settings. Somes games like GTA IV, rely more on the CPU.

I have a Y550 with a GT130m/512 which was replaced by the GT240m and it runs games like L4D, TF2, SFIV at top resolution and high settings no problem and then it can run Crysis on medium settings fairly well with a little slow down in intense seens so I imagine the GT240 should be just fine for you.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm currently on a Toshiba A135 with an integrated Radeon Xpress 200m.
    1.5gb RAM
    70Gb HD
    1.73Ghz Dual core

Not for gaming at all. xD

That's what I had in my old Averatec, and pretty much all I could play was Wolfenstein ET and Halo PC. The Y550 with the 240M will, needless to say, completely trounce your old system.

    Well currently I can play:

    Halo
    Guild Wars
    Grand Chase
    Rappelz
    Team Fortress 2
    Killing Floor
    AA2
    FlyFF
    Etc

Oh, and I'm on Vista - I'm a tweak freak - I try to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of my system xD

I don't have a laptop yet, but I'm hoping to get a Lenovo Y550 with the nVidia 240M GPU. Last week one with 4GBs of DDR3 RAM & 320GB HD was available for $679 with coupon. I would have bought it, but the previous week it was available for $569 with coupon!

Here's a link that has some VERY useful gaming results with mobile GPUs -- 'Computer Games on Laptop Graphic Cards'

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

This link specifically gives benchmark and gaming results for the nVidia 240M -- http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-240M.17654.0.html

Here's another link with relative performance between laptop graphic cards -- 'Laptop Video Graphic Cards - Benchmark List'

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Here's another one including desktop and laptop GPUs -- 'Video Card Benchmarks'

    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

The above website also visually shows performance ratings sequentially on another page.

You also might enjoy these CPU-benchmark links --

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

I'm very happy I found the above links, since there are far too many different CPUs and GPUs for laptops making it very easy to buy an underpowered one.

Does anybody know the battery life of the Y550+GT240m? Also can it be configured with an extended battery?

One page suggests that the battery life for the Y550 is between 3.5 and 4.5 hours. I assume with the 240M the battery life is going to be around 3.5 or less.

    http://www.obsessable.com/laptop/lenovo-ideapad-y550/specs/#title

Lenovo doesn't have an option for a larger battery while configuring, but Lenovo's description on the Y series says that the battery life is 'up to 3.5 hours' --

    http://shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/WW/AG/merchandising/US/PDFs/yseries_techspecs_062509.pdf

Maybe there is an after-market battery you can get. I haven't looked.

    Hope this helps.

If anyone is interested in the Lenovo Y550 with the nVidia 240M GPU, follow this link ---

    http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1655999

    Use eCoupon -- USPY550ELITE -- for a $289 discount.

It says it's limited to 750 and I'm sure these will go fast.

I just ordered one with these specs:

    Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6600 (2.20GHz 800MHz 2MBL2)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
nVidia Geforce GT 240M graphic card with 1GB memory
15.6 HD WLED Glossy, 1366*768 with 1.3M integrated Camera
    4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz SODIMM Memory (4 Dimms)
    320GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
    SuperMulti DVD Recordable (Tray type)
Intel WiFi Link 5100 1x2 (AGN) WLAN
    6 Cell Lithium-Ion 2.6Ah

I added an extended warranty (I know....), and a carrying case, but the ABOVE setup has a price (before tax) of $569!!!!

Hope you're able to get it if you're interested....

Sorry, no 8+ hour battery or WSXGA Wide XGA+ display (with 24% more resolution), both found on a MacBook Pro are included ;)

After my order the spec sheet said that it included: 2X2GB3-8500DDR31066MHZSODI.
I assume this is 2 x 2GB DIMMs, instead of 4 x 1GB DIMMs. I hope this is true, if I decide to upgrade later.
[Other places have stated that the Y550 only has two DIMM slots, since even the ThinkPad W700ds only has two slots. Too bad Lenovo doesn't update this information.]

    Estimated ship date -- November 19, 2009

Just wonder what kind of offer Lenovo will have on Black Friday, but still this is a great deal.

ie. what processor and ram. I've got a post on here " SL510, Y550 Selection Dillema" I'm trying to get answers for. Thanx in Adv.

My system configuration is posted above. It doesn't appear that you can upgrade to a discrete graphics card with the ThinkPad SL 510.

I guess it really comes down to how you plan to use it. Perhaps you should have copied and pasted your other thread here - or at least the link.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=435794

As you can see in the link below, the main differences in the P8700 & the T9600 appear to be size of L2 cache (3MBs for P8700, 6MBs for T9600), processor frequency (2.53GHz for the P8700 & 2.8GHz for the T9600), and Max TDP (25W for the P8700 & 35W for the T9600).

    http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=37006,35563

    Also see -- http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile...e=&month=&or=&search=&sort=sorting&type=specs

A *quick* calculation gives the T9600 a 20% performance lead over the P8700. I don't know the price difference, but I don't know if a 20% performance difference is worth it. Maybe if it added some functionality not found in the P8700. I think I've read elsewhere that others have opted for more RAM instead (if the programs you're using can readily utilize it).

Perhaps the TDP of the P8700 system will allow that system to run longer between charges, and possibly give it a longer system life due to lower temperatures. Hopefully other forum members can give you a better informed opinion.

Others have stated that having a dedicated GPU (plus as much RAM as you could afford) is better for video/photo editing. Still, you might want to pose your question in a newsgroup (alt.graphics.photoshop, adobe.photoshop.elements, etc.) or a graphics and/or video editing blog elsewhere about what is the best dedicated hardware at your price point.

You mentioned 'Level 2' gaming - does that relate to the 'Class' groups found here? -- http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Graphic-Cards.130.0.html

I guess I'd go for the Y550, the CPU of your choice ( Lenovo DOES offer the P9600 and the T9800 for the Y550. Perhaps you're not using a direct link?), the 240M GPU and 6GB of RAM.

Here are all of the differences between the P8700, P9600, T9600, T9800

    http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=37006,37266,35563,37005

Looking at the specs, I guess I'd get the P9600. Notebookcheck's performance ratings are: -- P8700 (#34), P9600 (#23), T9600 (#18), T9800 (#14). The price difference for the T9800 doesn't seem worth it. (The other two processors are available on the SL 510)

Then again, why not just opt for the ThinkPad W series??? :)

    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...ing_pages/ThinkPad_notebooks/2008/W700/W700ds

    Oh, you did mention price....
