My next laptop is going to be used for half work (nothing performance-intensive...mainly lots and lots of word processing, add in some reading PDFs and internet usage) and half play (Mass Effect 2 & 3, Starcraft II, and maybe Battlefield 3). I'd mainly been considering consumer laptops (Dell XPS 15, Alienware M14x, etc), but on a whim I looked at the specs of a ThinkPad W520 and I was impressed with what I could get in the ballpark of $1500.

But I wasn't sure if the Nvidia Quadro video cards are any good for gaming, or if there are other reasons why I should be wary. I know the speakers are crap, but that's easily rectified with headphones and/or external speakers.

    Any thoughts?

The Quadro 1000M according to notebookcheck is based off of the GT 425M, which is almost on par with the GT 525M.

The Quadro 2000M is supposed to be based off of the GTX 460M, but supposedly performs closer to the GT 555M.

The Quadro 1000M is clocked slightly higher than a GT 540M, and should therefore perform like one. SCII runs fine on a Quadro 1000M at native resolution (1600x900), Extreme settings, so far, from personal experience.
