If you have the time and the patience (and can keep track of small screws), you can replace the stock thermal paste on the CPU and PCH with something better. It should drop the temps a few degrees or so, which might help keep the fan speed a little lower.

Once I uninstalled the stock Lenovo drivers and installed Synaptic's drivers instead (I got rid of scribe, though), the trackpad, in my opinion, has been working great.

It's a laptop. I kind of figure the speaker will be serviceable, but nothing great, especially on a an ultraportable. My X220i speakers are actually better than the ones on my R60e. As with most laptops if you want good sound you should use speakers or headphones.

I use my CPU in the lowest power state, which does keep a lid on fan noise and heat, but it will gimp SSD performance.

I usually don't calibrate as I don't need color correctness. My IPS screen is very good as is.

    I use the stick.

I get about six hours on the six-cell with a clean install of Vista, which is about three times what I need. I never really felt the need to tweak it for more.

Go into the sound control panel. Double click on the speakers and go to Enhancements. Try enabling Loudness Equalization if the speakers are too soft. Seems to really increase the volume on mine. Not really sure what the downside to enabling it is (if any), but it does seem to increase my volume.

I notice clipping with Loudness Equalization enabled. As in, the treble doesn't go as high and the bass doesn't go as low (sometimes resulting in an awkward moment of near silence).

    Increased distortion?

Especially when you turn up the frequencies in the graphic equaliser ;) That was always a crazy fix, imho. Better is wasn't so soft in the first place.
