This is a very strange problem, I am currently in the process of getting my new g530 set up. I have installed every driver, and everything works except for the wired internet. I am running it through a hub with another machine connected to it as well. My desktop works just fine.

    Things I have tried:
    1. another reformat (didn't do anything with it the first time)
    2. Switching cables
    3. Switching ports on the hub
    4. Plugging the machine directly into the modem

Wireless internet works just fine, but I have to steal it from a neighbor to use it which I don't want to do, plus wired internet is often useful to have. I have yet to contact Lenovo but will do so asap.

can anyone shed some light as to what the issue may be?

So exactly what error are you getting?

    No connectivity at all?

Is DHCP enabled on your router? and is your IP settings in your notebook set to obtain automatically?

Can you try pinging your router/hub?

pinging the router worked, I got a reply. The notebook is set to obtain an ip automatically, I have no default gateway, and still limited connectivity.

just a question, why would having the ip settings to obtain automatically matter if I already tried and failed to get an address?

It doesnt, just making sure its not set to a specific IP/gateway.

What router/hub is it? Do you have other machines plugged in thats working fine?

Your router might not be providing your notebook an IP address.

Yes, I have 2 machines plugged into the the hub and the desktop works just fine, that is what I am using to ask these questions. I had the desktop plugged directly into the modem for some time and I tried that with the laptop as well with no luck.

if it matters the modem is a sb5120 Cable modem by Motorola provided to me by comcast and the hub is by d-link with no visible model number or identifying factor.

Hmm im out of ideas, try disabling IPv6 if your using Vista/W7. Other than that i can only think of your drivers
