I recently bought the above at a very decent price and am generally happy with it.

My only question regards the CPU fan. I can never hear this and it doesn't appear to operate at all. I have registered the temperature of both cores at between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius so it doesn't seem to be overheating. The only thing I have noticed is that after about 4 hours use the palmrest area to the right of the touchpad starts to get a bit warm. Its not that much but I remember this happening with an old Sony VAIO , couple of months before the hard disk failed and was replaced, prior to the motherboard dying.

Does anyone have any input on this. Is the fan just set to come on at high temperatures and that's why I can feel it working?

It's normal for laptop surfaces to get a bit warm after long use, especially if the case is made out of metal (e.g. brushed aluminium), as it will conduct heat better.

If you have checked temperatures, and they are as low as you say (35-40C are very low temps), then don't worry about it. As long as the fan works during high loads, (i.e. the fan is not dead), you're fine.

Thanks for the advice. I went out and bought a chill-pad anyway and now the machine is like ice!
Nice laptop in my opinion, by the way. I am not a gamer or any kind of extreme user. This simple no frills design suits me and I find it quiet speedy enough for my requirements and with good resolution.
