I really like Lenovo's ultrabay concept . it kinda sets up laptops to be as flexible as their desktop counterparts in the near future. My question is, will the gpu's released by Lenovo in the future revisions of the y510p be compatible for our current y510p's like the GT850? It would be great if Lenovo would consider this, although economically speaking it may not be the best idea since previous buyers will never have to change laptops again for another 2-3 years since they can just slap in a more powerful gpu. If you look it on a different angle it is kinda feasible as well, since more people will be enticed to buy it for its versatility.

Lenovo is ditching the Ultrabay concept, and i'm a bit glad they did so. It was a nice concept, but it cause a lot of thermal and stability issues.
The future of the Y510p is in the Y50, which should be out sooner or later. -
Even if they didn't ditch the ultrabay concept, a GTX 850m would not be compatible. The GPUs need to match up pretty closely. I believe people were able to get the GT 650m and GT 750m working together, but that's because they're essentially the same GPU. The GTX 850m is going to be Maxwell based instead of Kepler based, so I doubt they would be compatible.

I agree it will never happen but imagine if you could disable the onboard Nvidia GPU and add in a more modern ultrabay GPU after a couple years and run optimus with the intel and new GPU. That would make the Y510p last a lot longer. Too bad it will never happen.
Future of y510p?
