Let me begin by saying, I'm selling my 2Ghz Core 2 Duo Macbook for the Thinkpad X61s. I have given a lot of thought and I realized that laptop size is more important to me than the OS. As much as I love OS X, the benefit of having an ultraportable out weighs the benefit of OS X in my opinion.
Before I got my Macbook, I have been using an IBM Thinkpad X30. I loved the overall feel of it, its ultra-compact size, and the Trackpoint; the Macbook couldn't compete in these 3 qualities.
It's been fun playing around with OS X. I've learned a lot of things about the Operating System that I wouldn't have known if I didn't get the Macbook. Fun times are over now and it's time to get serious with the Thinkpad
Here are my questions about the Thinkpad X61s:
1. The Atheros wireless card has better reception than the Intel but sacraficing a little heat on the right palm rest. Does the Intel run cooler?
2. The UltraLight has an LED backlight, right?
3. Will Lenovo ship me Vista x64 if I request for it?
4. Does Lenovo ship the Vista DVD, or is everything still in the hidden partition?
-
the only question i can answer confidently is number 2...
2) the UL screen does NOT have an LED backlight. this rumor started because of a comment on one of the LenovoBlogs and in a review (PC World?), but was corrected by the same lenovo blogger who accidentally started the rumor. if you search, you will find a link -
3) Is there an option that specifically says Vista Business or Ultimate 64 bit? If there isn't, then you will get the 32 bit version.
-
4. Does Lenovo ship the Vista DVD, or is everything still in the hidden partition?
I got my x61 last week. They don't ship the Vista disk now, but yes, everything is in the hidden partition. -
Really ? it didn't come with upgrade anytime DVD of vista ? -
My T61 came with an upgrade anytime CD. I am also in Canada though if that changes things.

If you really think you'll miss your mac then I think you should install Ubuntu on it and try to get beryl working on it. Both OS X and Ubuntu use gnome so they look pretty similar.
It makes me wonder why people pay extra for macs anyways, sure they're probably easy to use but a little learning never hurts anyone. Plus judging by the HardOCP article apple has you buy any software (i.e. word processor) you need, instead of all the free stuff on Linux and Windows. Thus tightening the grip on you.
Glad I'm not posting this on the Apple forums, I know I'll probably get eaten alive -
