My X220 Tablet had its fan constantly running and was hitting 80 degC so I decided it was time for a repaste. I chose to use Liquid Ultra this time around, and while it was a process to disassemble, temps dropped back down to a nice 65 degC max under full load 4 cores.

So check up on your rigs every now and then! I don't think stock paste jobs from 2011 would be faring well by now.

    +1.

As a rule of the thumb, I re-paste all of my machines once every six months or so. That might be an overkill in many people's opinion but it has worked well for me.

    Obviously, YMMV.

When I would game on my notebook (last one was a 3820TG) I would repaste at least once a year. I redid my X301 with IC Diamond 7 when I bought it nearly 3 years ago. I hardly ever hear the fan. The 10W SU9300 C2D might be the reason.

I've had my T61 since the beginning of 2008 and I have never once opened the machine. It is in constant use ( 5+ hours everyday of it's life since I bought it ) and she still runs like new ( and cool too ).

Maybe I should re-paste it just for cheap insurance.

I think I'm going to have to do this process on my X220, it'll be my first time. Do I need a dust free environment to apply the paste? My room definitely does not fit that description :(

Also, what brands of paste would you recommend?

You don't need to be in a dust free place. Just take your time, keep track of your screws, and follow the disassembly guide (or look for a youtube video. You do NOT need to remove the LCD from the bottom case, I got away without doing that.

As for paste recommendations, either IC Diamond 7 or Liquid Ultra
