    Hello all,

Over the weekend I did a Windows XP reinstall on a T61 and noticed that after all the updates (Windows+Lenovo) the network services including:

    Ethernet connection
    Wireless connection
    Windows Firewall

were taking approximately 2 additional mintues to start (and appear appropriately in the systray) after other services were up and running. The machine functions fine before, and the networks are fine after the seemingly long delay.

Note that at this moment, no AV software has yet been installed to cloud the issue. I noticed it when an HP dv9700 with near identical specs (but Vista) that I was restoring at the same time, was connecting much more quickly. Not apples to apples, but enough to notice.

Has anyone noticed (and resolved) any similar issues?

    Thank you.

That doesn't sound right, when I install Windows XP on my T61 it just flies. How many processes you have at the moment and what apps you installed on the T61? Also whats the specs do you have on your T61?

Yeah as Hearst said, how many running processes do you have? I reimaged my Z61t with the XP recovery discs from IBM, it had 66 processes up from 33. I managed to disable stuff that wasn't needed and I brought it down to 41 and it is just as fast/ as a clean install.

check the logs in the Event Viewer.

It could be some service failing to initialize something, thus probably times out and then your other stuff that depends on it loads.

In a stroke of luck, I ran across some details regarding network service slow downs on XP after installing .Net Framework 4 and its patches. It proved to be the problem after some testing, and I was able to find a workaround to alleviate what is supposed to be a temporary problem (.Net will eventually work all of its issues out on its own, or so they say).

My suggestion: If you don't need it, don't accept the update on XP.

Thank you all for a being a sounding board as I ran this issue down!

I'd recommend that you update the network drivers (I have the Intel 4965AGN) from the official Intel driver page (not from Lenovo Support), because from my experience the newest drivers allowed me to fully utilize my card and I had no more networking issues.
