I was looking at getting a T60 some months ago with the IPS Flexview screen, which was a $225 option (IIRC). I just looked over Lenovo's website and it doesn't seem to be an option anymore.

Anyone know what the story is?

edit: assuming it has been discontinued, for now at least... which Lenevo offers the second-best quality display?

    TIA.

It's gone for the time being. You can probably still pick up a pre-configured model while they last though I would suggest you hurry. I have heard the LG screen on the 15.4" widescreen, but I haven't personally seen one. It's probably not as good as the IPS.

They are moving to widescreen and no one is making a widescreen IPS panel.

I have the LG ZaZ ref. It's ok, but its not true 8-bit so it is inferior in the end.

Doesn't LG make pretty nice LCD screens though compared to the rest?

The Lenovo websited does still list IPS screens actually if you go through their student/teacher program. There is no option to get an IPS screen and the Fire Gl gpu though!

Wow, that is disappointing. I would rather have an IPS 4:3 screen. For me, screen quality trumps aspect ratio. Any word on an IPS 16:10 screen on the horizon?

No, they aren't made right now. Only two companies even make any IPS as far as I know. It's not a big market. So I wouldn't count on ever seeing them.

I am really glad I recently purchased my T60 w/ IPS, I wanted a laptop with a very high color accuracy display and IPS does the job well. The high viewing angles are also very useful. I imagine Lenovo will be migrating to LED backlit screens soon enough, and those are supposed to be very nice for color reproduction although I don't think they have improved viewing angles vs regular LCDs.

I think the color accuracy (uncalibrated) of the flexviews according to the results I have seen is nothing special. However, the color gamut that is another matter completely, I'm sure it is quite good.

I will check right now, but it is only available on the 15" Lenovo.

I am back with my correction. I was right, but they got rid of the 15" laptop.

It is confusing to me why they would discontinue them. Poor sales? I would think everyone wants a better viewing angles and color reproduction. Whenever I walk into BestBuy to checkout the laptops, I hate how I always have to hunch down low just to see what is on the screen.

I've got a 15" flexview T60 on order that should be arriving any day now. I have not been notified that the IPS is not available so I assume I'll get it.

However, how can I be sure that is what they sent? Is there some identification in the system information somewhere that will confirm it? I've been burned before so I don't want to rely solely on my receipt.

Just look at the viewing angles. A TN display will invert the colors looking from below. IPS won't. You can also check your parts list and us a utility like everest if you want. But it should be blindingly obvious. If you payed 225 dollars for it I'm sure you will get it. They just aren't taking NEW orders for them right now, probably they just wanted to stop having 3 shells for 1 model.

Duh.....I suppose I should have thought of that, it's so obvious. Guess I'm just a bit nervous about ordering something then finding it discontinued almost immediately afterwards.

This one better last me a long time.

I found the flexview option on the Education (discount) Purchase site but not the EPP (employee purchase) site. Naturally there is a price advantage to the EPP site.

When I called the support line for the EPP site the sales person said he could build a T60 with the flexview screen - I now have it on order as of 4/2/07.

    Fingers crossed.

ckcanon- I finally made the decision to get a T60, but figured there was no way to get the Flexview. After reading your comments I have got to at least try what you did. Where can I find the EEP support line number? And, were you able to get yours without having employee connections? I'd be grateful if you could help me out. :)

Careful because, I dont know about the Lenovo EPP, but there are strict limits on the IBM EPP and they are audited. I believe both plans are administered the same.

In accordance with the terms and conditions of the EPP, fraudulent procurement can void your warranty. Somehow, some thinkpads were ordered using my employee number without my knowledge or authorization. That depleted my quota for the year.

After I was contacted about it, the warranties were voided for those particular machines recently purchased by some people who I've never heard of and who somehow recently used my employee ID without my knowledge or consent.

Good point! It's not right to abuse the system-- empolyees SHOULD get bennies over others. In my case, however, I wasn't trying to save money, just looking for a way to get the Flexview screen. :(

Get the consent of the employee, which is no problem if s/he's a relative. As we're limited in the annual purchases for our empl #. And be wary of fraudulently using some empl#/password given to you second hand. If the employee finds out and doesn't acknowledge use of his/her number for your purchase, you may have a laptop with a voided warranty should it require service later.
