I'm buying an X61 tablet as soon as it comes out. My question is.. am I putting myself at greater risk of getting a lemon by ordering right when it becomes available? Would I be better off waiting a week or two while they work out the bugs?

Probably not. If you do get a lemon, you'll be refunded in full or your item will be replaced 100%. I wouldn't worry about early adoption technical problems.

I wouldn't worry. My 2nd laptop was an XPS M140 that was ordered the day it was publicly released. I know for a fact mine was within the first batch of the production...that notebook is still running strong to this day.

People's experiences may differ, but I wouldn't worry too much about it at all.

I agree with what's already been said. Paul Thurott has been using a T61 that Lenovo gave him way early and he seems blown away by it and reports no trouble. I'm sure his was among the first that were built.

I don't have any Lenovo experiences, but I would never order a laptop in the first few days or even the first couple of weeks of release.

Last year, I had ordered an HP dv9000 the first day. The model was supposed to come with an HDMI port, but on the day it went up for sale, all mentions of the HDMI port were gone. 2 days later, the HDMI port was back and listed as a standard feature. If you ordered in those first 2 days you got a plugged hole where the HDMI port would have been.

That's more of a "don't buy HP" testimony than anything else! :)

You won't get a lemon; however, you will be better off waiting for at least 2 weeks because Lenove is slow to put up available options for you to choose. Take the T61 for example, the camera option wasn't avaible until a couple of days ago. I rather wait and get every option I want.

I almost changed my order and added the camera, but I have a camera on my Vaio now and I've never used it during the past year I've owned this machine. Since Lenovo would likely cancel my current order and put me at the back of the line again, I opted to forgo the camera.

Thankfully, no new and enticing options since. :)
