All of a sudden my my Fingerprint reader is not functioning. When I try to enroll fingerprint(s), it tells me that it cannot access the sensor. The driver is there and is up to date. I've checked the BIOS and it shows as "Internal". Does that mean that the sensor is bad?

Try reinstalling the fingerprint driver and software. I have noticed that if you have the default windows driver installed and then install the lenovo fingerprint software, it does not seem to recognize the sensor. Installing the driver which is included with the lenovo software should fix this issue. So, uninstall the fingerprint dirver, do not let windows automatically find the driver and then reinstall the lenovo fingerprint software.

I tried it, however, I still think it's the sensor. I keep getting: "Cannot communicate with sensor. Please confirm the sensor is ready."
I'm about to order a palm rest with a sensor from IBM.

Take an image of your HDD, set Windows back to the factory settings and see if the reader works then.
Or reset the BIOS to defaults.
Only because Windows has issues to communicate with the reader means it is bad.
