aghh..........I tried really hard to read your post....
For your first problem, it's a normal thing that the computer runs into
sleep mode when you close the lid. However, you can let the computer stay on even if u close the lid. To do this, go to the control panel--->Power management-->advanced to change the different options.

    I don't think I understand your second question, sry,man.

kastro, how exactly are you holding your computer in bed? Do you turn it so that the keyboard is vertical, at a 90 degree angle from a flat horizontal surface? To be more specific, this is how the keyboard would be during normal use: __

Are you holding your computer with the keyboard like this: |

If so, holding the computer at such an angle may disable the hard drive protection.

    Kastro...

i think u got both of ur answears...

closing the lid makes ur system to go to standby..
nothing strange with it.. its normal for thinkpad..
you can change the settings to go to hibernate or shut down..
from power management in control panel..

    and i think..
active protection is protecting ur HDD when ur are flipping ur Z61 over..
and thats why it gives u the msg..
and that makes sense... u should avoid doin that...

Usually just a few degrees from closing, 45 degrees is odd because there should be a little piece of plastic at the back of the keyboard that gets pushed in to tell the notebook to go to sleep (or the lid is closing). Maybe yours is really sensitive. If you want to disable this from happening, you could go to Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced > and then select "Do Nothing" as the option for the lid closing -- you'll have to remember to put it to sleep yourself when you close the lid though or the battery will drain when it's closed.
