Wow!!! Laptop is solid like a rock, top quality!!! It has one of the best 15" screens I have seen, very crisp and bright. Runs very quiet, if when the fan kicks in - its almost silent. I also like that little led light at the top of the display. Very good keyboard layout and quality of the keys. Also, performance is very impressive (M1.7GHz 735). Super Pi test run for 2m 01 sec with AC and on a battery (I have battery set for high performance). BTW, when you set battery for high performance of CPU, it last for about 3 hours. Of course you can get 4 hours out of it if you set for high battery performance, but your processing power will drop.

One question I have to T42/T41 users, which one of IBM's background services can be disabled? I want to clean up the system to save more resources, but not sure which one is really necessary to keep running.

The only comment I have is that while I was moving/copying a lot of my files over the wi-fi from another computer at home, I had some problems accessing CD-RW/DVD drive while copying files from CDR in parallel. Sometime it took 1-2 minutes before reading or recognizing the CD in it. Maybe its due to some heavy duty tweaking I did to WinXP (www.musicxp.net) where a lot of the parallel and background processes are disabled to save cpu resources. Anybody else ever had similar problem?

Glad to hear you like the size and dimensions so well. Now I'm really looking forward to getting mine!

    Hi twister,
Can you run the pi test on your new T42 and post the results in that thread?
    I'm very interested.

    Thanks

I just bought mine too!! Works great!! Although I bougth the 14" screen.

I noticed that although I got the 60Gb HD, I only appear to have 51.3 Gigs. That, plus all the stuff IBM installs on their laptops, plus Office left me with 43.4Gb available.

Is this normal and is there anything we can do?

    Thnks!!

[quoteUnfortunately it is. IBM doesn't send you any CDs with programs. Everything is installed on a hard drive with a recovery image (I think?). So, along with other IBM support junk, it takes a hefty chunk of your hard drive. Plus, the hybernation file (used for WinXP) takes room on your hard drive as well. My only concern is that when I got my T42, I had approximately 55GB free, but I also didn't order any additional pre-installed software beside WinXP.

I think you can call them up and ask for recovery CD, cause I did that with my older Thinkpad. Than, if you can get ahold of original WinXP, just nuke your partition and do a clean install, because IBM recovery CD will put all their crap back on a hard drive.
    [/quote]

is this a normal practice with IBM? [?]

don't they have to include (send) an original WinXp together with the notebook, along with certs and manuals?

Yes, it is the normal practice with IBM. If your OS (WinXP Pro) will crash and you need to re-install or repair it, during the laptop bootup you have an option to start "Access IBM" emergency startup program. From there, you can literally repair all of your programs and, according to IBM, even get on internet even if your OS crashed. Of course, if your hard drive is a toast - than nothing will help you. I guess in that case you either send it back to IBM for replacement or if you buy your own hd, than you can request a recovery CD.

I guess I can try to call them up and ask if I can get the original WinXP CD. Will let you know what's the answer is.

sounds a bit weird to me, IBM should have send the CD together with notebook since we also "purchase" the operating system, right? [V]

look forward to hear what's their answer to your query, hopefully you're successful with the CD.

I think I'm going to get rid of the partition crap.

Are you guys sure you can get rid of the partition with a Windows XP CD?

Can you install all or some of the bundled IBM software that came with the computer? If yes, how? I'm worried that fome of the funcion F# on the computer might not work after the partition without all the IBS software on it...

    Any toughts??

Although IBM doesn't include the restore CD's they have a software that lets you create them. It will use 7 of them and after that you can get rid off the partition. In case you want to go back just put the cd's and they will leave everything like the first day when you bought the laptop. I've tried all kinds of instalation and so far I like the IBM the most because it installs all the drivers and software perfectly. Then I used partition magic to re-do them at my convenience and uninstalled all the software I didn't need.

    Greetings from spain.

Twister -- please email or respond if you're still watching this thread. I am looking to incorporate Ableton Live and other audio software into live performances and more traditional DJ sets, and I'm curious how usable the FlexView design is on stage and/or in weird lighting conditions. I'm thinking either the T42 2378DUU, or Toshiba Tecra M2. thanks!

ahhhh, good old fruityloops -- sounds like fun!

thanks Twister -- your input is much appreciated, especially the thumb pointer tidbit. i can't quite afford the nice hi-res 15" though. my boss has one with the 14" XGA screen, and I do notice a tiny bit of ghosting during full motion video. could be in part to his settings, as he likes the brightness cranked way up. still, everything else about this unit shouts "GO!!!" I'll be making my decision in the next few days.

The case is titanium alloy and can handle some tough abuse.
