a helpful review, as usual from notebookreview.com
but the report of a higher-pitched fan is a worry! - the pitch of any sound in a system is crucial - and often overlooked in reviews - it would be interesting to hear of other reports re this factor.
before i moved to an SSD, i chose one HDD over another purely on pitch difference....

higher pitched fan is probably due to the smaller fan and heatsink assembly, so to move the same amount of air using smaller fans, the fan rpm would PROBABLY have to increase when it is operating at the maximum speed.

But the question is how much louder the new fan is compared to the older fan design.

Granted I use a SSD, but I barely hear the fan now. So a "quieter" fan is hardly as big an issue for me as the fear of a higher pitch (which I may hear...)

I too am easily annoyed with high pitch noises. I will comment on the fan when I receive my T410 (which is estimated to ship the 9th).

This is a fair point. My x200 Tablet is exceedingly quiet, but it does exhibit some Penryn whine. The amplitude is minute, but the pitch is very high. In a quiet environment I can hear, and be annoyed by, this from a few feet away. However, this problem is actually quite common and is by no means limited to ThinkPads (although it tends to be more obvious as ThinkPads tend to be much quieter than competing notebooks).

Glad it's a good review... mine ships on the 12th (supposedly) and I'm looking forward to it even more now!

I ordered mine on 02/01/10 (February 1, 2010). Hopefully it arrives in the next week!

Perhaps it is some sort of technological revenge, but the pin of my adapter that plugs into my computer came loose, so that my computer charges somewhat randomly now. I ordered a new piece to replace the part that is loose (which was only a few dollars). But still, I think the laptop knew it was being replaced and wanted to make sure it could make these moments of excitedly waiting somehow worse.

Or maybe it's just that HP makes cheap parts for its adapters. EDIT: I should say, they /use/ cheap parts for their adapters.

Anyway, I cannot wait to receive it.

    Thanks,
    Ryan
