Is it a good idea to upgrade to a 1 gig stick for 7 dollars then buy 2 1 gig sticks online for around 85, and then sell the 1 gig stick that came with the laptop later?
Also i was wondering if the thinkpad has any memory that might be soldered on preventing me from putting in the 2 new sticks

You don't need to replace the stick that came with the notebook. Just upgrade to 1 1gb stick and buy another 1gb stick online and upgrade it yourself. RAM is not soldered into the the motherboard.

I was thinking i would have to replace the 1 gig stick that comes with the system because there might be compatibility problems or something, also i was thinking that i could run the sticks in dual channel? or would this not be worth it

These days you typically only see memory soldered to the motherboard on very small ultraportables. If you look on FatWallet or SlickDeals, there have been some very good memory deals lately.

I started a thread a while back about my memory install.
It includes photos of the memory slots.

I have two different brands, and CPU-Z shows that I am running dual channel.Attached Files:
