Just got my x201. However the upper left hand corner of the keyboard, seems a bit "lifted"/"bloated". The keyboard is definitely not 100% even. Especially the very upper left part (Thinkvantage & Sound keys). Is that normal ?

I'm a bit alarmed  and asking cause i'm not sure whether i should return the unit or not.

And another thing, how can i silence the fan, when the machine is idle (or browsing, etc). The fan seems to be working constantly (or is it a noisy Seagate HDD 7200 rpm, and not the fan - not high pitched), although the machine is not being stressed at all. I did change the cooling mode to "passive", also tried the power save mode, didnt seem to have an effect)

    Try reseating the keyboard.

You can use tpfancontrol to adjust the fan speeds manually if you want.

    OK, i removed the keyboard.
The problem seems to be with the upper part of the chassis, it is slightly bent. Very slightly, but that is further exaggerated by the keyboard. I would prefer a *perfect* unit, but i can live with this small blemish, since it's only aesthetic, and not functional.

Having opened the unit, i could also observe the fan. The fan is OK, actually it does not rotate at all when idle. The noise comes solely from the HDD!!! I'll have that one replaced with my intel SSD.

However, got another question. I took a photo of the open unit, because at 3 points i could see that there are screws missing. Not sure if this is intentional, or if i have indeed a generally faulty unit with (more) problems which i'd better return ASAP. This particular one is "Made in China. Factory ID: KS"

Could someone please check it out and let me know.
    Thanks in advance.

PS. i've marked them as 1,2,3 and the red line is marking the part of the chassis that is bent.

Send it in and have it fixed. Give lenovo a call and say it is bent.

the "missing" screws are sitting on your desk.   if you look at where the keyboard screws are located, they match the red arrows in your photo.   that plate gets clamped down when you reinstall the keyboard and screw everything together.

there's nothing faulty i can see.

He just said the upper part of the chassis is bent. I was not talking about the screws.

disconnecting the ribbon cable and setting the keyboard flat on a table will answer that pretty quickly.   from the description it sounds normal but a photo of the problem would certainly help.

You are right, they do match! (*relief*).
Thank you both for your help, greatly appreciated.

PS. just noticed the typo in the topic title, revealing my love for "Fawlty Towers"

    Hmm...
It's not that easy to take a picture that shows the problem, it's a very slight bent of the chassis.

The keyboard is fine, is flat. The chassis is slighty bent, or better put, is not 100% flat. If there had been a screw holding it, it would be fine.

Not easy to take a photograph showing the bent, but i'll try

at a minimum take a photo of the area in question and point to it with an arrow.

OK, not easy to show the problem.

The upper left part of the chassis appears slightly bent (mostly affecting the ThinkVantage key, sound keys, and 2, 3 keys), however maybe the actual problem is that is pushed upwards at a certain point, by a metallic plate (marked with the tip of the arrow). Not sure if this metallic plate is causing the problem, or if the chassis is bent.

If you can check this metallic plate with yours, it's angles, does it have angle of 90 degrees (of it's horizontal and vertical sides), or mine is bent, causing the chassis to appear bent.

i have a tablet, not a notebook, so mine is slightly different in that area.

the bracket you've pointed to is supposed to be flat as far as i can tell.   check to see if there are any obstructions underneath it or if it can flex down when pushed.

My X200 looks quiet similar to your X201 with the metal plate. I'm not exactly what your picture is attempting to show, but if it's the EMI Shield, the silver shield, I've had it off. It's pretty pliable. I doubt it's strong enough to warp anything.

    Hey Beh0lder,

what did you do with your keyboard in the end? I just received my X201 and the keyboard is definitely not even - it's just like you described it - bloated in the upper left hand corner... I've been a huge fan of Thinkpad since I can remember, and I'm not particularly happy about this. I'm actually considering sending the unit back and requesting a brand new machine, given that I just spent more than 1000 bucks on it... sigh...

Thanks mate, I appreciate your reply!
